Summer Rhythms adds new highlights
By DEVIN MONK
The heart of Little Elm will pulsate with reggae, blues, and classic rock and roll this month at the Summer Rhythms by the Lake concert series.
The free Friday night concert series in June at the Little Elm Park amphitheater will feature a range of musical talent from crowd favorites such as Justin Exit and The Fabulous '50s and '60s to newcomers Watusi and Baloney Moon.
The series will start at 8 p.m. Friday with Ken Savage and The Best Kept Secret, another band familiar to Summer Rhythms audiences. It's no secret that the crowd's praise of the band's classic rock songs from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s earned the group a return visit.
"People just loved them when they were here two years ago," chairperson Linda Janssen said.
Justin Exit will perform classic rock songs June 23, and Baloney Moon will close out the series June 30 with blues and light rock.
Little Elm Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Little Elm will host the event that will feature a few new wrinkles.
Food vendors that are chamber members will be invited to serve food at the park, and booth space will be reserved for town mayor and council candidates to pass out campaign literature at booths Friday and June 9.
The three-year-old series has been blessed with good weather and the lake backdrop that offer a serene setting to listen to music and enjoy friendships.
"It's another opportunity for residents of the lake community to bring out the picnic baskets and enjoy music under the stars," Janssen said. "More importantly, Summer Rhythms creates this sense of community, where people can enjoy their neighbors."
The concert series not only helps bring residents into the downtown Little Elm area and promote businesses, she said, but it also further connects residents in surrounding cities and towns such as Lakewood Village and Oak Point with Little Elm residents.
"We wanted - with the growth - to be able to maintain that sense of community," she said.
Once the music stops, the evening often keeps on going.
"Even after the music ends, so many people just stay to connect with people they haven't seen in awhile who live in the Little Elm area," Janssen said.
Sponsors for this year's event are: Little Elm Chamber of Commerce, Town of Little Elm, Breezeway Veterinary Services Inc., The Olden Companies Inc., Bloom Flowers, Capital One, and Cooper's Copies and Printing.
"We've been very fortunate to have those sponsors that believe in the arts," Janssen said.
