The number one goal of Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District for the 2006-07 school year is to maintain its rating with the Texas Education Agency as a Recognized school district.
Its number two goal is to improve ninth-grade student academic success.
At a called meeting of the C-FB ISD School Board last Thursday, Dr. Annette Griffin, superintendent, outlined five goals for the school district for this 2006-07 school year.
She showed a chart that indicated that only 77 percent of ninth grade students who entered high school in 2005 were promoted to the 10th grade.
The chart showed that 36.3 percent, or 292 ninth graders, failed at least one class and that 10.9 percent, or 56 students, failed seven classes in the spring of 2006.
“The ninth grade is an important year of adjustment for students entering high school,” Griffin told the school board. “The ninth grade is a critical year, and we must do something to improve conditions in the ninth grade.”
John Tepper, school board president, said, “Improving ninth grade performance is our second most important goal, next to being a recognized district.”
Griffin also said, “Between the ninth and 12th grades, too many kids are dropping out of school. Some are failing and some are bored.”
James Goode, board member, asked about the possibility of having stand-alone ninth grades, in buildings separate from other schools.
Griffin said she had some experience with that and does not feel that stand-alone ninth grades are good ideas.
“The ninth graders need older students to show them what to do,” she said.
All high schools in the C-FBISD are grades nine through 12.
The number three goal for the district is to “prepare all students to be college ready.”
Griffin said an attempt will be made to “increase the number of students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses.
Goal number four is to “provide flexible learning opportunities for students and staff.
The Division of Technology services will conduct pre and post surveys to evaluate the use of IPods for staff development, will maintain a log on the number of times the online learning modules are accessed through the district’s V-Campus (Virtual Campus), and maintain an accounting of the number of students enrolled in V-Campus and their academic success.
Goal number five is to pilot a two-way dual language program. The Division of Instruction will give the kindergarten students at Janie Stark and Blanton Elementary tests in certain subjects in the fall and spring to evaluate their English and Spanish language development.
