Store's cash register stolen

Published: Monday, December 11, 2006 1:59 AM CST
A McKinney man's plot to steal money from a convenience store by stealing the cash register almost worked until police caught him with the money and some crack-cocaine just three blocks away from the scene.

McKinney police officials said Ray Lockett, 24, of McKinney, is accused of stealing from the Town & Country Food Store on Greenville Avenue, located across the street from J.W. Webb Elementary School, on Nov. 28.

McKinney police Capt. Randy Roland said Lockett entered the store around 8:53 p.m., grabbed the cash register off the counter and ran back out of the store while a security camera on the adjacent wall captured the incident.

Police arrived at the scene and compiled a description of the thief that was sent to area officers. Officers found a man fitting the suspect's description on the corner of Bumpas and Standifer Street, later identified as Lockett, approximately a half-hour later, Roland said.

Officers found Lockett carrying the same “substantial” amount of cash left in the cash register minus the coins as well as some crack-cocaine, Roland said. A K-9 unit was dispatched to the area. They found the cash register abandoned in a field on Greenville Avenue next to a building, Roland said.

Lockett received two misdemeanor counts of theft and evading arrest, and a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance. He also received a $5,500 bond, which he had not posted as of Friday, according to Collin County Detention Center records.

This is not the first time the Town & County Food Store has been a crime victim. A masked gunman entered the store July 20, produced a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk proceeded to open the register but when the suspect turned his head toward the door for a moment, the clerk seized the opportunity. He grabbed the man and tried to slap the gun out of his hand. The gun discharged, firing a round into the floor. He continued to struggle with the gunman until he pushed him out the front door and into the street where the gunman fled on foot. The clerk was not seriously injured. No suspects had been identified or arrested in connection with the July 20 robbery.
