Youth group snowed in
By Chris Taylor, Staff Writer
A youth group from Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound missed its ski trip, but saw plenty of snow.
“The bus slid of the road as they were trying to get to their destination, early Friday morning. They’ve been stuck in Springfield, Colorado since the blizzard hit,” said Dean Libby, associate pastor of Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church.
The youth group was on its way to Colorado for a ski trip, but never made it to its destination. The group has been staying at church in Colorado while they’ve waited for the roads to become safe to travel.
The youth bus slid off the road about 12 miles outside of Springfield, but the National Guard rescued them. Most of the occupants of the bus had cell phones with them, so they were easily able to call for help, Libby said.
The group is expected to return sometime today, but the trip will be slow because the roads are still not clear, he said.
“They are ready to be home. They are making the best of the situation. They didn’t get to ski at all, but are learning some other lessons,” he said.
Libby has been in contact with the staff representative since the accident, and said the youths have been doing odd jobs such as shoveling sidewalks and cleaning dishes while guest of the church in Colorado.
Libby said the group was lucky no one was injured.
