The possibilities greatly improved yesterday that Plano East football head coach Johnny Ringo’s most successful year with the Panthers will also be his last.

Ringo has been named one of the four finalists to replace Todd Dodge as the head football coach at Southlake Carroll.

A Carroll ISD spokesman said Thursday afternoon that Ringo was one of the 28 applicants for the position. That list was quickly whittled down though, as Ringo was announced as one of the five finalists for the position Friday afternoon.

Ringo will only be up against three other candidates though as one of the five finalists, La Marque head coach Bryan Erwin, has accepted the head coaching position at Flower Mound Marcus.

In addition to Ringo, the other three candidates for the Dragons job are: Keller Fossil Ridge coach Hal Wasson, Frisco coach Vance Gibson and Andrews coach Blaine Springston.

“I have coached with or against all of those guys, and they are all top-notch coaches that run disciplined programs,” Plano West head coach Mike Hughes said. “I hope Johnny gets the job though; he is a great coach.”

Of the four candidates, Wasson is believed to be the leader to get the job. Wasson was the running backs coach at Southlake Carroll in 2001 and 2002. Wasson’s son Chase was also the quarterback when the Dragons won their first Class 5A state championship in 2002.

At 46, Ringo is the youngest of the four remaining candidates and is also the only coach who headed up a 5A program in 2006. Ringo has been a head coach for 10 years with stops at East, Irving MacArthur and Coppell.

During that time, he has compiled a record of 68-41-2. Ringo has also served as an assistant coach at SMU.

Ringo could not be reached for comment, and Panthers Defensive Coordinator Mike Lawrence declined comment for this story.

Although Ringo has reached the playoffs in each of his three seasons with the Panthers, 2006 was his most successful year. This past season, East finished second in District 9-5A and advanced to the third round of the Division I state playoffs before losing to then-undefeated Spring Westfield.

Ringo has advanced to at least the second round of the playoffs every year while at East, compiling a 21-15 record along the way.

The final four candidates will begin interviewing next week, and Carroll ISD superintendent David Faltys has said that they are hoping to have a new head coach in place by the end of next week.
