(Editorial) Sports Fans: Games up for another round

Published: Thursday, February 1, 2007 10:52 PM CST
We're inundated with sports these days.

We've got not only round-the-clock televised games but also 24/7 radio talk-show yak-yak about the games, the players and all their doings privately or publicly.

We've got not only the gradually expanding field of professional sports, which each year seems to add something new, but also high school sports as well as private sports leagues for children or alternative sports groups in skate-boarding and the like.

And, of course, there is the general fitness movement that now encompasses virtually anyone of any age.

The question then becomes: Can another sports outfit make it in this seemingly crowded field?

Locally, we have gotten an indication this may be possible with the renewal of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's winter games for the second time in Frisco.

Labeled a sports "festival" and patterned after the Olympics, these games are designed to help prepare future Olympians as well as recreational participants.

Competition has been scheduled at different locations throughout the city over two days in officially recognized sports, including baseball, basketball, volley ball, table tennis, cheerleading, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, soccer, swimming and wrestling.

Thinking smartly, organizers have come up with a pre-games village that will offer live entertainment, face painters and bounce houses, and will be followed by a parade that will include participants and past Olympians, including gold medalists Thane Baker and Ryan Berube.

Great credit goes to an estimated 150 community volunteers who have agreed to make sure things go smoothly.

As far as we know, there has been no formal study of the games' economic impact on the community - it was estimated at $1.2 million last year. But it seems reasonable to say that, whatever the figure, they will have at least some distinct effect.

Organizers have also done some more smart thinking by making admission to the games free with the donation of canned goods or nonperishable food. This promotes not only the games but helps the needy.

The long-term future of this event is not clear; sports competition in this country is vigorous, to say the least.

"If you build it, they will come," may sound fine in Hollywood, but it doesn't always work that way in reality.

Nevertheless, the renewal of this year's winter games and an expanded slate of events appear to bode well for the long run.

And we wish them the greatest possible success.
