Wyman hits for cycle in Plano rout
Kevin Hageland Staff Writer
The marquee District 9-5A softball game Friday night was Plano East versus Allen; so many eyes throughout the district were on that game, including Plano Head Coach Cynthia Zea and several of the Lady Wildcats players.
That’s because Plano made quick work of Richardson, defeating the Lady Eagles, 25-0, in 2 1/2 innings. More noteworthy for the Lady Wildcats though was junior Lauren Wyman, who hit for the cycle in just four at-bats.
Wyman hit a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning to get her abbreviated evening started. The game started at 6 p.m. as opposed to the scheduled 7 p.m. first pitch, because the Lady Eagles were unable to field a JV squad.
After starting the game with a triple, Wyman had a better stroke later in the first inning as she belted a solo over-the-fence home run. That shot was the Lady Wildcats’ 14th over-the-fence homer of the year, demolishing the previous club record of six in a season.
“This is a big-banging team,” Zea said. “And in my opinion, they are really a lot of fun to watch.”
While Wyman was halfway to the cycle after the first inning, she was also leading Plano on the rubber Friday night. Wyman pitched two innings against Richardson and struck out all six hitters she faced.
But it was back at the plate where Wyman made the most noise. In the second inning, Wyman got a double in her first at-bat, leaving her just a single short of the cycle. And she would get just that in her final plate appearance of the evening later in the second. In addition to the four hits, Wyman had five RBI.
Almost lost in the hoopla surrounding Wyman’s cycle was the performance of Plano senior Molly Goza, who belted the ball around Friday night as well. Goza was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two triples and six RBI in the Lady Wildcats’ victory.
Plano junior Dana Orians got in on the action as well, going 2-for-2 with one RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore Stevie Pierce was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
“We faced a changeup pitcher, and the girls did a good job of staying back on the pitches and swinging hard,” Zea said.
Plano is 5-2 thus far in 9-5A and will start the second half of its district season Tuesday when the Lady Wildcats play host to Allen at 7 p.m. This is a rematch of both team’s district opener, in which the Lady Eagles were victorious, 7-6, in 10 innings.
“Our girls are really fired up about playing Allen because they know that first game was one that got away,” Zea said. “Our girls’ slogan this season has been, ‘In it to win it,’ and we are right where we want to be now. We want to be district champions, that is these girls’ goal and nothing else will do.”
