Trustees to host town hall meeting about AVID

The Plano ISD Board of Trustees will host a town hall meeting from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Williams High School, 1717 17th Street.

PISD Superintendent Doug Otto and his leadership team will present information about the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program, one of the district's initiatives related to college- and career-preparatory programs for Pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

Family Night with the Frisco RoughRiders

The Plano ISD Council of PTAs is hosting a PTA Family Night with the RoughRiders on May 3.

This is the council's first time to host an event for all of PISD.

Council of PTAs to host program and vendor fair

The Plano ISD Council of PTAs will host the 12th-annual Program and Vendor Fair from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 31 in the Jasper High School Gymnasium.

The event is an opportunity for booster clubs, PTA units, youth groups and student organizations to get ideas about fundraising, spirt wear and programs.

The event is free and open to the public.

A brown-bag luncheon, Socialization: Your Child and the Community, is set for 11:30 a.m. April 18.

During the April 18 meeting, the presentation will discuss how it is difficult for some children to socialize and communicate with other children their own age.

Parents will learn about barriers to your child's communication and various programs to help them learn new skills. The speaker will be Berkley Williams, MS, CCC/SLP, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) at the CallierCenter for Communications Disorders. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Practical Parent Education office, 1300 19th Street.

Blood drives benefit administrator

Residents can continue to donate blood in to benefit longtime employee Larry Tucker.

Tucker, executive director of Fine Arts and Academic Programs, has been in the hospital intermittently during the past two months due to an illness that causes chronic anemia.

Tucker joined Plano ISD in 1981 as the first band director at Plano East Senior High. He has served as a district wide administrator since 1989.

Earlier this year, he was recognized statewide as the Texas Music Administrator of the Year. His wife, Marion, is a sixth grade teacher at Wilson Middle School. His two children, Jason Tucker and Jennifer Penny, are both teachers at Rice Middle School. Cyndi Tucker, his daughter-in-law, also teaches at Wilson.

Free immunizations offered Saturday

CareVan Clinic will have free immunizations from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have an immunization record.

PTA Multicultural Cookbook

The Barron ECS PTA is looking for great recipes to compile into a cookbook. The PTA members would like for the cookbook to represent the diversity at Barron.

Mentors, volunteers needed for couple hours a month

Brinker needs several adult mentors to volunteer one hour a week, two to four times a month to engage in various activities with a child in need.

Walk-4-Carlisle, health fair today

The Carlisle PTA presents two events today: Walk-4-Carlisle and Health Fair and Gifts.

Walk-4-Carlisle, a student walk-a-thon, will raise money for a new portable stage needed after the building renovation is completed.

From 5:30-8 p.m., the PTA will have healthy fun and information at Carlisle's Health Fair and Gifts from the Heart Silent Auction.

WaMu student banking takes aim at savings

Washington Mutual is working with Christie Elementary students to start a School Savings program.

Every Thursday, students will have an opportunity to go to the bank, which will be in the library, to deposit money.

Students can bring pennies, dimes, quarters and any money they want to save.

Officers to be elected at March 29 PTA meeting

The next PTA meeting is 7 p.m. March 29 the cafeteria and PTA officers will be elected for the 2007-08 school year.

Third grade students will also perform a program entitled "Around the World" and will sing songs from six different countries.

Gulledge Kindergarten Roundup

Kindergarten Round-Up will be from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. March 30 in the school gymnasium.

Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2007, to be eligible for kindergarten.

R.M. Haggar

Paper recycling pushed for fundraising, awareness

R.M. Haggar Elementary is raising money and environmental awareness by encouraging the school's students, families, faculty and neighbors to recycle paper by depositing it in yellow receptacles located in the school's parking lots.

In addition to regular office paper, the bins can accept newspapers, magazines, catalogs, telephone books and junk mail. The following cannot be accepted: cardboard, plastic, glass, metal and trash.

The school's "green team" will be available to receive paper recyclables every Tuesday morning in March during carpool from 7:15-7:30 a.m.

Haggar Elementary is located at 17820 Campbell Road in Dallas.

Talent showcase to

The second-annual Talent Showcase is set for May 9 and 10.

Students who want to participate must submit permission and registrations forms by March 30. The event is not a competition.

The Division 1 showcase will include students in kindergarten through second grade and is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. May 10 in the cafetorium.

The Division 2 showcase will take place at 8:15 a.m. May 9.

Volunteers needed for awareness event

Experience the Awareness is an event where students will explore a 10-station obstacle course highlighting 12 different disabilities designed to help students learn, understand and experience the many disabilities found in our communities.

Volunteers are needed on April 27 in the morning and afternoon. There will be a brief training session prior to the event.

Tiger Fest roars in this Saturday

Tiger Fest from 3-6 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets will be needed to play all games, activities and to purchase food. A Tiger Fest information packet, containing a list of all games, activities, food and ticket prices, volunteer and pre-sale ticket order forms and raffle information, was sent home in February.

Tickets during the carnival will be four for $1. Pre-sale tickets will be sent home this week.

'Spring Fling' to hop in March 30

PTA to host television seminar

Rasor PTA will present "Drop The Remote And Nobody Gets Hurt" on April 10.

Parents can learn to take control of their TV and use TV watching as an educational opportunity.

Carnival, silent auction debuts Saturday

The Saigling Carnival will take place from 3-5 p.m. and includes an obstacle course, giant slide, (socks must be worn), dunking booth, food and games.

The silent auction has over $23,000 dollars of donations including a Nintendo DS Lite, IPod and many restaurants offers. The auction is set for 3-6 p.m.

Readers' Theater

to present 'Aladdin'

The Stinson Readers' Theater has begun preparing for the spring production of "Aladdin." The children performing in and working with the play will have weekly rehearsals on Thursdays after school from 2:45 - 4:30 p.m. The final performances will be in May.

CiCi's night to benefit PTA

The PTA is encouraging families to make Tuesday nights CiCi's night.

On Tuesday, at the CiCi's located at the intersection of Spring Creek Parkway and Alma Drive, students and families can chow down on pizza and pasta, with a portion of the money benefiting the PTA.

Donations request

This month's donations request is indoor recess games for the classrooms.

Educational, fun games are a welcome break when the weather outside means no outdoor play time.

If your family is tired of them, please bring them to school so children can enjoy them. A box will be placed in the lobby for drop off.

The school is also accepting donations of books, magazines and plastic shoeboxes. These donations are welcome all year.

PTA Sponsors 5K walk-a-thon

The Carpenter Middle School PTA is preparing for an event that incorporates the entire community and promotes healthy living a 5K walk-a-thon, Family Fun Jam Saturday.

This event is a fundraiser, with proceeds earmarked to buy a new digital marquee in front of the school.

There will be live local bands, a DJ, arts and crafts, pies and a silent auction.

Carpenter students will bring pledge forms home soon.

Walk-A-Thon Student Pledge Goal Prizes include:

  • $10 is the registration fee and each entry will receive a t-shirt.

    Mardi Gras theme for spring dance

    A Mardi Gras Social will take place tonight. The cost is $5 in advance, $6 at the door. Tickets will be sold at lunch times Wednesday through March 23.

    Price includes pizza, drink, dessert, obstacle course and DJ.

    The sixth-grade dance is from 6-7:30 p.m. and the seventh/eight-grade dance is 8-9:30 p.m.

    Haggard

    'Donuts with Dads' on March 30

    All Haggard dads are invited to Donuts with Dads at from 8-8:45 p.m. March 30.

    The first 30 minutes will consist of a time that dads can sit with their child and other dads to enjoy a time of socializing over coffee and donuts.

    From 8:30-8:45 p.m., while the kids have gone on to class, Mr. Evans will be briefly talking to all the dads about an exciting new program for fathers and father-figures that will be starting next year at Haggard.

    The Murphy PTA wants to make you the next Maverick Idol.

    Dust off those dancing shoes, warm up those voices, organize those musical groups, practice your juggling or whatever it is you do to entertain and join us on March 30 for the third-annual Murphy Talent Show.

    Drug seminar for parents today

    "How to Be Safe When Drugs Invade Our Community" will be presented by the Rice PTA at 10 a.m. today.

    Topics will include how to talk with your children about drugs, what teens can do if they know someone is using drugs and how to intervene with a child who is using drugs.

    Students to share cultural origins

    The Multi-Cultural Club will host International Evening at 6:30 p.m. March 29. The performance will take place in the middle school's cafetorium.

    Students will share their individual cultures through traditional dances, songs and instrumental music.

    A parade of nations will represent 26 countries.

    Plano Youth Leadership taking applications

    Plano Youth Leadership (PYL) is now accepting applications for the 2007-08 leadership program.

    Students who are currently enrolled in the ninth grade and planning to enter the 10th grade during the 2007-8 school year are eligible to apply.

    PYL trains students in leadership techniques and community awareness to prepare them to make a positive impact on the quality of life in the Plano community.

    Applications are available in the counseling office, or can be downloaded from the Plano Youth Leadership Web site at www.planoyouthleadership.org. Completed applications and reference forms must be postmarked no later than April 6.

    Talent show to debut in April

    The annual talent show CLARKAPALOOZA will take place at 7 p.m. April 26. Tickets are $5.

    Auditions are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Auditions will take place in the choir room. Information packets are available from choir or theatre.

    International Dance Club hosts classes

    Learn to do the Foxtrot, the Swing and more at the International Dance Club.

    Students to be showcased in Artists of Deerfield

    The Artists of Deerfield is a free art show featuring the works of Jasper and Plano West student artists along with artisans living in the Jasper neighborhood.

    The spring show will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 31 in the Deerfield Clubhouse.

    Residents can show support for community art and purchase gifts for upcoming holidays.

    Teacher recognition application available

    The Dallas Mavericks and The UPS Store have announced the continuation of the Teacher Recognition Program, created to recognize Metroplex educators for their work in the classroom.

    Students in grades K-12 are asked to obtain an application and explain why their teacher deserves to be recognized. Ten winning teachers will each receive $1,000 for themselves and $1,000 for their school, as well as tickets to a Mavs game and recognition during halftime. Nomination forms are available in the front office.

    Old clothing needed

    If students have old clothing, blankets or backpacks, there will be a collection box in the foyer.

    'Enjoy the City' fundraiser continues

    Jasper is selling Enjoy the City coupon books for $15 each as a school fundraiser. The book has over 750 coupons to casual dining, fast food, entertainment, recreation, retail, services and travel.

    Books can be purchased from receptionist Debi Page in the front office. Parents can send money (cash or check) with their students to take to the office. Checks should be made out to "Jasper High School."

    Shepton

    PTSA to host "Facing the Senior High"

    The PTSA will host "Facing the Senior High" at 7 p.m. Tuesday for all Shepton students and parents to learn about life at Plano West.

    Several Plano West seniors will talk about school at Plano West, the difficulties and challenges of fitting in at a new school and how their expectations were met.

    They will also discuss Plano West student life, clubs, sports, activities and answer questions.

    The event will take place in the Shepton Library, and refreshments will be served.

    New AP course to be added next fall

    Sophomores will have the opportunity to enroll in AP European History this fall.

    Advanced Placement European History is a survey course dating from approximately 1450 to the present that concentrates on major political, social economic, intellectual and cultural themes throughout this period.

    The course will be an elective credit and will not satisfy the required social studies courses.

    Students can contact their social studies teacher or counselor for information.

    Student who want to enroll should add the course to their schedule by March 30.

    Campus-wide fundraiser ends Saturday

    The Shepton Student Advisory Council and student body are hosting a campus-wide fundraiser until Saturday. The goal is to raise $10,000 in four days.

    Funds will be divided among three charities: Save Darfur (international); St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (national); and the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center (local).

    Tax-deductible checks can be made out to the group that the giver wishes to support. In addition to classroom incentives, KISS FM has agreed to come out to Shepton for a lunchtime party if the goal is reached.

    Collections are talking place in students' fourth-period classes.

    *7-8 p.m. April 2 at Plano Senior High School, 2200 Independence Parkway, in Building B - Lecture Hall. Park in the lots off Independence;

    *6:30-7:30 p.m. April 9 at Plano West Senior High School, 5601 West Parker Road, in Building A - Presentation Room.

    Juniors may take U.S. History and seniors may take English IV and Government/Economics.

    Don Collins memorial scholarship available

    Plano Youth Soccer would like to provide the Don Collins Memorial Scholarship application to Plano Senior High, Plano East Senior High and Plano West Senior High.

    The application is available at www.planoyouthsoccer.org.

    The Plano Labor Day Invitational Tournament provides the opportunity to raise funds so that the Plano Youth Soccer Association can award college scholarships to area youth who have participated in soccer activities through Plano Youth Soccer or Plano Schools.

    The Tournament has set up a non-profit trust fund for the scholarships to be distributed on an annual basis.

    The scholarships are awarded in the spring to graduating seniors.

    Drill team to present 'Friday Night Funk'

    The Planoette Drill Team will present PIZAZZ 2007 "Friday Night Funk" April 12-14.

    Show times will be 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m. each evening.

    Ticket sales begin April 2 and will take place daily in the PSHS Cafeteria during both lunches.

    Tickets for Thursday are $9, Friday and Saturday are $10. Tickets will also be available at the door.

    Plano East

    Panther Preschool accepting applications

    Panther Preschool accepting applications for the 2007-08 Panther Preschool is located at Plano East Senior High School. Under the guidance of a certified director, the preschool provides a student teaching experience for senior high students who are enrolled in Early Childhood Professions and are seeking to pursue careers with children.

    Preschool students may enroll for two- or four-day sessions: Mornings from 8:30-11 a.m. or afternoons from 1-3:30 p.m.

    The curriculum includes: phonics, language, science, math, art, music & movement, social skills, building a positive self-esteem and fun.

    S.T.A.R.S. to walk for disabilities

    Join the Plano West S.T.A.R.S March 31 in the Dallas West End to show support for citizens with developmental disabilities.

    Activities begin at 9 a.m. and the march starts at 11 a.m.

    The march will feature a rally, activities and games. Registration is free.

    Percussion performance ignites Saturday

    Plano West Senior High School Percussion, under the direction of Matt Weyer, will perform "Percussive Artistry" Saturday.

    Tickets are $8 at the door will begin at 7 p.m. in the Plano West Auditorium, 5601West Parker Road.

    All ticket proceeds benefit the Plano West Band Program.

    Baseball Booster Club promotes recycling effort

    The PWSH Baseball Booster Club's recycling efforts are still underway.

    Unused cell phones, printer cartridges or laser toner cartridges can be placed in the collection boxes in the Plano West foyer. The items will be refurbished and reused where possible, or recycled.

    Prom volunteers needed

    It's spring semester, and that means annual prom preparations are under way. The assistance of many volunteers is needed.

    Science Learning Center searches for alumni

    The 30th anniversary celebration of the Holified Science Learning Center - Outdoor Learning Center - will be held from 2- 4 p.m. April 22.

    Tammy Welch, secretary at the center, said that the staff is gathering a list of names of Plano ISD employees and graduates who visited the center and woods during their elementary school years in Plano ISD.

    Collin Creek Mall Cash Back For Schools

    The top three participating schools in the district can earn money to support PTA programs, activities and fun events for students in three different shopping experiences at Collin Creek Mall.

    Take report cards, meal receipts and shopping receipts to the service desk located at the entrance of J.C. Penney Co. on the lower level.

    Tell the service representative that you are participating in the Cash Back for Schools Program. Show receipts or report card and they will make an entry for your school.

    Show your student's report card and for every A, or the equivalent of an A, the student will earn 100 points.
