Victim of naked stabbing in critical condition at Plano hospital

Published: Thursday, April 5, 2007 9:22 PM CDT
Linda Brannum, the victim of Tuesday night's bizarre stabbing in downtown Plano, remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon, according officials at the Medical Center of Plano.

Brannum, 46, of Farmersville was stabbed by a naked Lashunda Jean Richardson, 28 of Dallas, when Richardson threw herself in front of Brannum's car in the 1400 block of Municipal Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to police.

Brannum's car stopped abruptly to avoid hitting Richardson and was rear-ended in the process.

When Brannum and her husband exited the vehicle Richardson ran into a nearby parking garage on Avenue K.

Brannum followed the woman into the parking garage where she was stabbed repeatedly in the hand and torso by Richardson, police said.

Richardson was in a severely agitated state when she was arrested, said Officer Rick McDonald, a spokesperson for the Plano Police Department.

"She was shouting vulgarities and obscenities when police arrived," McDonald said. "This individual was out of control so there was probably a lot of resistance going on. I'm sure (officers) did their best to keep her under control."

Once inside the police squad car Richardson kicked out the rear window inflicting $1,200 worth of damage on the vehicle, police said.

Richardson was in custody at Collin County Jail Thursday.

Her bail was set at $12,500.

Richardson was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief.

The assault charge is a second degree felony that carries up to 20 years in jail and $10,000 fines.

Criminal mischief is a class A misdemeanor with up to a year in jail and or a $4,000 fine.

Police declined to comment on what caused Richardson's strange behavior.

"There may be factors contributing to her actions, but at this time, we are not going to comment on what those are," McDonald said. "This is not a mental commitment. This is a crime that occurred."

why the sarcastic tone every comment here has? wrote on Apr 13, 2007 8:34 AM:
" Who are you people that post comments? I can't believe the facitiousness and sarcasm over such a deadly situation!! Maybe the woman was on drugs, but you are just speculating. It's no wonder why stories like this get so far bent that they aren't even true by the time you people have told all your families. East Plano, the downtown area, is a beautifully restored neighborhood, with much to offer anyone who'd rather not wade through teenagers and strollers at Stonebriar. This is an occurence that could have happened anywhere, and IT IS SAD!! What is wrong with all of you? "
