Poet to appear

at Collin College

Collin County Community College will play host to a Texas poet laureate on June 6 at the Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco.

Alan Birkel-bach, a Plano resident, served as the state’s poet laureate in 2005-06. He will present “Different Man, Different River: Life is a journey and we change with each second, what do we learn along the way?” from 10:15 a.m. to noon in the Founder’s Hall Shawnee Room, 148. The Preston Ridge campus is located at 9700 Wade Blvd. in Frisco. The event is free.

Birkelbach will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of his book after the program.

Birkelbach’s newest publication is titled “Alan Birkelbach: New and Selected Works.” His other collections are “Bone Song,” “Weighed in the Balances” and “No Boundaries.” His poetry maintains a Southwest and Texas theme, teeming with verse about old dusty towns, cowboys and golden Texas prairies. He also focuses on people and their circumstances as “lost” individuals.

His poetry has been included in several journals and anthologies such as “Mobius,” “Grasslands Review,” “Borderlands,” “The Langdon Review,” “Concho River Review,” “New Texas,” “Ardent” and “Texas in Poetry II.”

He has been commissioned to write poems on the history of Plano, specifically for each of the city’s five libraries.

Birkelbach is a member of The Academy of American Poets.

The event is co-sponsored by the communications and humanities division at the Preston Ridge Campus and the Collin College chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta, the English honor society for two-year colleges.
