Class of 1957 remembers city five decades ago

Published: Tuesday, May 29, 2007 11:33 PM CDT
A group of alumni from Carrollton’s first high school spent some quality time reminiscing over days gone by Saturday at the 50 year class reunion of the 1957 graduating class of Carrollton High School.

Several dozen gathered in downtown Carrollton’s historic square Saturday for pictures and conversation with old friends. The alumni well remember the days before downtown Carrollton had a gazebo and when the Plaza Theater hosted double features on Saturdays.

Members of the class of 1957 pointed out where they remembered the staple downtown businesses kept shop. The quilt shop situated on Main Street was once a bank, according to one alumnus. Another pointed out the building her father built that was the only elevated structure not flooded by heavy rainstorms.

LaPat Johnson-Brewer, a 1959 graduated whose husband, Graham Brewer, graduated in 1957, said one of her most prominent memories was attending movies at the Plaza. She said in her youth, the theater had a separate door for African-Americans and that the theater was segregated.

DeWitt Perry School is the oldest school in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. The land for the school was donated by DeWitt Clinton Perry and his sister Harriet Perry Warner. Students and faculty occupied the two-story red brick building on Jan. 19, 1916, and the original cornerstone for that building is still on the campus today, according to district records.

A new high school, Carrollton High School, opened Sept. 14, 1936 due to increased enrollment. The two facilities were situated adjacent to each other on what is now Belt Line Road. Carrollton High School eventually became DeWitt Perry Junior High School and the old red brick building was torn down.

Alumni from the class of 1957 said their school was the current DeWitt Perry campus. While the area has changed quite a bit over the years, alumni still remembered fondly their old stomping grounds, especially the downtown theater.

“That’s where we did our smooching,” graduate Wayne Floyd joked.
