Amyx having grand time in pros
By Chris Roark, Staff Writer
Former Coppell baseball star Brett Amyx has had more than one chance to play professional baseball.
He always chose college first, though. Now that he’s finally at the pro ranks, he’s enjoying every minute of it.
Amyx, who was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June, immediately started making an impact for the Burlington Royals. In his first game, he went 1-for-5 with five RBIs, including a grand slam, to help Burlington beat Danville, 11-7.
Amyx had missed the last few games with a rib cage injury, but he was expecting to be back in the lineup Tuesday. When healthy, he has started every game at first base and is hitting .257 with a home run and six RBIs in 35 at-bats.
“It’s taken some time to get used to the velocity,” Amyx said. “But I’m starting to get a feel of it now.”
Burlington is one of nine teams in the Appalachian League, a short-season league below Class A. The season runs from June 20 to Aug. 27. Through 18 games, Burlington is tied for first place in the four-team East Division at 11-7.
Amyx was a Third-Team Division III All-American at UT-Tyler this past season, leading the American Southwest Conference with 66 RBIs and slugging percentage (.762). He hit .348 with 12 home runs.
He was drafted out of high school and had some looks throughout college but remained in college.
“As soon as I got drafted this time, I was ready to go,” Amyx said. “It would have been a rough road if I hadn’t stayed in college to play. And I couldn’t have asked for a better year.”
Seth Garrison, a 2004 Coppell graduate, was drafted in the 25th round by the Boston Red Sox, but a TCU official said he is likely to return to TCU next season. Corey Kluber, also a 2004 Coppell graduate, was drafted by the San Diego Padres. He was unable to be reached for comment.
