Boys basketball team finds positives in Great American Shootout
By Chris Roark, Staff Writer
The Lewisville boys basketball team got a chance last weekend to see how effective a partial lineup can be.
Lewisville went 3-2 at the Great American Shootout, held in Denton. It played in the NBA division, the highest division of the tournament, thinking it was going to have a full lineup.
The team won the event last season, but this time it didn’t have a full roster. Michael Thomas, who coached the team, wonders how well the team would have done had everyone been available, but he’s excited about how the rest of the players did.
Part of that was because of the play from experienced players in guards William Weathers and Eric Dansby. They were two of three seniors Lewisville had available for the game but were the only seniors with varsity experience.
In the five games, Weathers scored 91 points, including 27 points in the opening 79-76 win over Colorado Select. He and Dansby led a late rally as the team recovered from an eight-point deficit in the final two minutes. Weathers’ steal in the final seconds put the team up by one. Dansby scored 21 points. Thomas said that getting past Colorado Select was an achievement since its shortest player is 6-foot-4 and Lewisville’s tallest player is 6-2.
Lewisville couldn’t make it two in a row as Pflugerville Select won the second-round game, 76-61. Lewisville was up by 10 at the half, but having only seven players suited up caught up to the team. Weathers and Dansby each scored 21 points in the game.
Lewisville bounced back with a 59-47 win over Houston Select in the third game, highlighted by Dansby’s 17 points and four steals. Weathers added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Lewisville moved to 3-1 with a 49-38 win over DFW Elite as Dansby led with 19 points and Weathers had 15.
Dansby scored 23 points in the 77-65 loss to the Houston Superstars in the Sweet 16-round game.
Thomas also saw how well its younger players can perform, too. Sophomore guard Jordan Richardson was consistent throughout the tournament, averaging 16.2 points per game, but had his biggest offensive production against Pflugerville Select with 19 points. He also scored 17 points against DFW Elite.
“He was unbelievable,” Thomas said. “He was hitting the boards and dishing out the assists. It was good for him because when the fall season starts, he’ll be ready.”
Sophomore guard Dominique Sheets was another young player who stepped up. Against the Superstars, he scored 14 points with four steals and six rebounds.
Other sophomores who made an impact were Drew Klawson and Isiah Young.
“We got a good look at what we’re capable of,” Thomas said.
Lewisville will compete in the MAYB tournament Thursday through Saturday.
