Hebron heads to 7-on-7 state football championships
BY RICKY MOORE, Staff Writer
For the seventh consecutive year, Hebron football coach Brian Brazil will be heading for College Station for a vacation of sports.
On Friday and Saturday, Brazil will ease back in the stands and watch Hebron’s competition in the State 7-on-7 Championships for the seventh time in as many years.
“I’m glad to watch them play,” Brazil said. “Whether you win or lose it is still about playing. When we were first starting the program here we used 7-on-7 to gain confidence.”
This year, the Hawks will open pool play on Friday in Pool H against Cy-Creek, Georgetown and Amarillo Palo Duro.
“If we go down there and play really well I’ll be excited,” Brazil said. “But if we don’t I’m not going to be down and all depressed. It’s fun to see us playing teams from around the state. I always find it a little exciting to play teams you ever face like a Katy or an Austin Westlake or an A&M Consolidated.”
This year’s 7-on-7 competition involved not only play in state qualifiers but also participating in the Metroplex Passing League. Brazil said the competition is good especially with the Hawks breaking in a pair of new quarterbacks in Tanner Marsh and Dylan McCain.
Marsh and McCain have handled most of the quarterbacking duties during the 7-on-7 competition. Brazil said playing an organized version of pitch-and-catch can’t hurt and can only improve both quarterbacks abilities and timing.
“Playing 7-on-7 definitely helps,” Brazil said. “But it does help 100 percent. Because it is just not the same as playing when the bullets aren’t flying out there and teams are blitzing and stunting.”
Hebron reached the state tournament by winning the Southlake Carroll qualifier. In the qualifier the Hawks upended defending Class 5A Division I state champion Carroll in the final of the qualifier.
