Lewisville names soccer, tennis coaches
By Chris Roark, Staff Writer
Both the boys soccer team and the tennis team has struggled in recent years at Lewisville, but two newly-hired coaches aim to change that.
Lewisville named two coaches last week as Ricardo Souza was hired to coach the soccer team, and Raymond Prince was hired to coach tennis.
Souza takes over for Kyle Smith, who resigned to take a full-time teaching position.
He is a certified “C” licensed coach by the US Soccer Federation.
One thing he has learned at his different stops is what style works best, and when he leads the Farmers, he will focus on a 3-5-2 alignment instead of the previously used 4-4-2.
“It’s aggressive offense,” Souza said. “The midfielder must win the game. Not the defense and not the forwards. That’s why we’re going to play a 3-5-2.”
Souza is also a fan of physical play.
“Hopefully we’ll have a physical style,” Souza said. “I don’t think you can win in soccer without making contact.”
Souza will inherit a team that is expected to return 13 players. Lewisville finished at 9-8-2, 4-8-2 in District 6-5A last season.
“The expectations will be high because of the limited number of players that we lost,” he said. “We will be ready to play in January.”
Prince will take over for Dale Bynum. He knows that there is a challenge awaiting him at Lewisville, but he has dealt with that sort of thing before.
“I’ve taken a program that had just freshmen and sophomores and turned it into a winning program,” Prince said. “I’m going to find the kids that have a goal. I know how to teach them.”
Prince has coached off and on for 16 seasons, most recently at Longview Spring Hill. During his coaching career, he has taken 23 players to state and has won eight team district titles. Also, 14 of his former players have gone on to play college tennis.
In addition, Lewisville has hired Brandi Fausett as assistant tennis coach, Ron Summers as assistant golf coach, Preston Jund, Mike Eiffert and Sonny Dack as ninth-grade football coaches and Corwin Anschutz as athletic trainer.
