Rowlett sweeps Sachse to claim Garland Tournament championship

Published: Sunday, August 19, 2007 12:45 AM CDT
New year, same old story.

If the results of the Garland ISD Tournament—which included all eight 10-5A teams—are any indication, Rowlett and Sachse will once again be the teams to beat for the district championship.

But unlike last year, when the Eagles chased down the Mustangs to hand them their first-ever district loss and force a share for the 10-5A crown, it could be Rowlett that all other teams are trying to catch this season.

Rowlett served early notice that splitting the district championship with Sachse last season will not be good enough now, as it rolled to a 25-19, 25-16 victory over the Mustangs in the championship game of the Garland ISD Tournament on Saturday at the Garland Special Events Center.

It was not always easy for the Eagles, who were stretched to the final game of best-of-three clashes with both Mesquite and TCA-Addison. But once they got to the semifinals, where they faced two familiar foes in Rockwall and Sachse, Rowlett took care of business.

In the final, the Eagles set the tone immediately, scoring the match’s first five points and racing to a 10-2 lead. The Mustangs, who had defeated Crandall, Crawford and Poteet to reach the final, fought back and behind four kills in the game by Kadie Murphy, clawed back to within 23-18.

But Rowlett, which got three kills by Jasmine Norton, were able to close things out to take the opening game, 25-19.

The second game was close at the start, but a five-point serving run by Norton, which included an ace and a trio of Sachse errors, gave the Eagles at 10-6 lead.

Rowlett maintained a healthy cushion through the middle of the game, but still only led 21-15 after an ace by the Mustangs’ Ryanne Lewis.

That is when the Eagles’ Mary Caitlin Bottles, last season’s 10-5A co-most valuable player, took over. Bottles had three kills to get Rowlett to match point, and then cemented the win with a block at the net to put the finishing touches on the 25-16 victory.
