Raccoons pull away from Cougars
By BLAINE CRIMMINS, Special to Star Community Newspapers
Two teams coming off tough losses were looking to get on track in District 9-4A at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco on Friday night.
The game began as a defensive struggle before Frisco (1-1) pulled away in the second half to defeat The Colony (0-2), 21-7.
Raccoon quarterback Gavin Gray threw for 187 yards on 13 of 20 passes, including two touchdowns to Alphonse Coleman. Coleman caught three passes for 64 yards. The majority of Gray's numbers went to Denszell Brown, who caught eight balls for 108 yards.
Six consecutive runs by TC standout Tony Peoples gave the Cougars some breathing room at their own 31. Peoples would finish the game with 201 yards on 29 carries.
Brown then made another big play, this time on defense, picking off TC quarterback Bryce Perkins' pass over the middle at The Colony's 40-yard line.
Neither team was able to move the ball until late in the first half when Frisco took over on its own 14-yard line following a blocked 29-yard field goal attempt. After a 16-yard run from Teni Ogunsola, Gray aired it out with a couple long passes, including his first two completions to Coleman. On second down and 9 from The Colony's 24-yard line, Gray found Coleman over the middle, who broke two tackles on his way to the end zone with 10.7 seconds remaining for the first score of the game. Frisco enjoyed a 7-0 lead at halftime.
Starting the third quarter, The Colony wasted little time evening up the score. Frisco got a steady dose of Peoples, who ran for 48 yards on the Cougars' opening drive. But the highlight was Perkins' 3-yard pass to Sorensen, who leapt into the air and fell hard for the touchdown.
The Colony's defense then held the Raccoons to a three-and-out but Richard Wilkinson's punt rolled out at the Cougars' 3-yard line. Momentum was on The Colony's side, however. In addition to ground gains by Peoples, Perkins hooked up with Sorensen, Trey Goodchild, and Peoples for big gains to move the ball to Frisco's 3-yard line. But the Colony coughed up the ball on third down, keeping the scored tied.
Three possessions later, it was Gray's turn to throw long, most notably a 32-yard hook-up with Coleman to give Frisco the ball at The Colony's 5-yard line. Gray was rewarded with a 1-yard keeper on second down for Frisco's second touchdown and a 14-7 lead with 7:21 left in the game.
When a Cougar punt deflected off the back of a lineman to end TC's next drive, Frisco took over at midfield. Though The Colony's defense had played tough all game, blown coverage on second down left Brown all alone down the left sideline for a 48-yard touchdown pass from Gray with 4:57 remaining to put the game out of reach.
