Celina ISD is sanitizing classrooms and athletic areas over the weekend after a case of Staph infection was confirmed at Celina Elementary School.
A single case of Staph was reported Wednesday and confirmed Thursday at the school.
School officials immediately responded beginning with a thorough sanitization of the classroom.
“We are being proactive; we have communicated with the custodial staff and they are spraying everything down with disinfectant,” CISD Superintendent Rob O’Connor said. “We have communicated with the parents today and we had extra nursing staff on campus.”
The district has scheduled work for the weekend to clean and sterilize the school. Because the school will be closed Monday the custodial staff will have extra time to clean.
“We think this long weekend is going to help, a lot, as we had a half day today (to celebrate Homecoming) and the kids will be out on Monday,” O’Connor said. “We are getting in the buildings and fogging everything down with disinfectant.”
Another student suffering symptoms consistent with Staph was reported late to school today, according to O’Connor but it had not been confirmed at this time.
“We did have one go to the hospital this weekend,” O’Connor said. “We do not know the exact type of Staph she had. We will have to confirm that with the doctors and the parents.”
Other district buildings will be sanitized during the weekend.
“In the past, three or four years ago, we have had Staph in the athletic area, so just to be precautionary we are spraying those areas down as well,” O’Connor said.
The district sent out a letter today to alert parents about the school’s actions regarding the infection and cleaning process.
