Family legacy continues
By Kevin Hageland, Staff Writer
Plano West senior Paige Burke signed with Central Arkansas Wednesday morning, but she is not the first person in her family to be courted by the Sugar Bears.
Back in 1955, Burke’s grandmother, Pattie Faldon, played basketball at Central Arkansas.
Following in the footsteps of her grandmother wasn’t Burke’s sole interest in Central Arkansas, but that fact and the school’s physical therapy program certainly helped the West catcher make up her mind.
Central Arkansas head coach Steve Kissel contacted Burke at the end of the summer and let the West catcher know of the school’s interest. Burke, who was also considering Louisiana Tech, made her official visit last weekend and got the opportunity to hang out with members of the team and meet the coaching staff.
“Their campus was gorgeous,” Burke said. “Plus I think I will do better on a smaller campus, so the decision was easy.”
Before heading off to college though, Burke has a few more goals to accomplish. As a senior on a Lady Wolves squad that will be made up of mostly sophomores and juniors, Burke is looked to in a leadership capacity and she said she is, “really looking forward to my final season at West.”
Burke is also hoping to travel more while playing select softball and wants to go to nationals.
Burke’s parents, Pattie and Neil said they were, “Very proud because we know how long Paige has waited for this,” and Burke took time Wednesday morning to soak in the moment as well.
“This is a great experience,” Burke said. “And it reminds me how hard I have worked to get here.”
