FISD boys basketball round-up

Wakeland

The Wolverines haven’t missed a beat since going 23-6 last season en route to claiming the bi-district championship. Wakeland is 4-0 for the first time in school history and is looking every bit like a team that can legitimately challenge District 9-3A title mainstay Princeton. On its way to winning the Prestonwood Christian Tournament last weekend, Wakeland averaged more than 77 points per game, while holding its three opponents to fewer than 55.

The Wolverines showed off their versatility by getting contributions from multiple players. Junior Preston Whitley, the reigning newcomer of the year, leads the team at 17.5 points per game, having been the high man in three of four games.

In a 65-55 win over Prestonwood Christian on Tuesday at home, three players hit double figures, including Malcolm Todd and Nick Hinton. Todd was a first team all-district selection last season, while Hinton, along with senior Justin Crawford, were second teamers. All-defensive team member Wilson Herlin is averaging 9.5 points per game, proving he is no one-trick pony.

Though Wakeland’s early-season schedule has been a bit soft, the Wolverines will get a chance to show their worth next weekend at the Frisco Classic against mostly 4A opponents.

Centennial

Centennial book-ended its pre-Thanksgiving schedule with a pair of wins, though the stuffing in between was sour at best.

An impressive win in the season opener was followed up by a poor defensive effort in an 87-57 blowout loss to Wylie. The Titans (2-2) doubled up the Pirates in the first quarter to take an 8-point lead into the second, but never stood another chance from there. Wylie scored 79 points over the next 24 minutes to win in a landslide. Tedrick Urune had as many points as the top three Centennial scorers combined.

Sanger put the clamps down Monday night to hold Centennial to nine points in each of the middle quarters for a 65-57 win to remain undefeated. Ryan Beasley, Justin Lee and Brett Horton all scored in double figures for the Titans.

The trio combined for 60 percent of Centennial’s points Tuesday in a 60-44 rout of Royse City on the road.

Liberty

The best weapon Liberty has in its arsenal is youth. All 12 players on the varsity roster will be back next season, giving head coach Jim Miller a year to tinker with the lineup and figure out what works best. But rest assured, the Redhawks aren’t in the business of preparing for the future. They proved that by creaming Conrad, 64-41, Tuesday at home. Ten players scored for Liberty, which was both due to the circumstances and the fact that the Redhawks are deep.

Freshman Cameron Brown will be an impact player for years to come. He scored a game-high 16 against Conrad and a team-high 14 in the season-opening 67-60 win over Denison.

If the early signs are any indication, Liberty may be in position to challenge for District 9-3A’s final playoff spot come February. It will all come down to how the young players adjust to varsity play.

Frisco

Early struggles are nothing new to the Raccoons. Frisco started off the 2006-07 campaign by losing nine of its first 10. While this season’s 1-2 mark is a far cry from that, the Raccoons haven’t been able to get consistent scoring from any one player outside of senior Casey Cheshier, who one district coach calls the only legitimate post in 9-4A.

Cheshier has led the team in scoring in each of the first three games, averaging 14 points an outing.

For the third year in a row, Sherman hammered Frisco in the season opener. After losing by 24 in 2005 and by 25 in 2006, the Raccoons were rocked 70-45 last week. They bounced back to beat Denton 61-53 Monday behind 23 points from Cheshier and 11 from Nik Harris. The momentum was short-lived though, as Richardson held off a late charge Tuesday to preserve a 53-51 win.

The Raccoons will take on Greenville on Tuesday before opening up the Frisco Classic with Denison at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at FHS.
