City asks for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD’s help

Published: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:27 PM CST
For the 1st time in city history, the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Board of Trustees and city council members had a business meeting Tuesday. At the top of City Manager Leonard Martin’s list was to implement an internship program for high school students interested in working for the city.

“We recognize that there are positions in the city staff that remain vacant for a year, and we want your brightest students to work for our local government,” Martin said. “I believe this will provide a great opportunity for kids that are not college bound.”

Superintendent Annette Griffin, agreed with Martin and said it was a good opportunity for the students. She said students will need some kind of continual education in order to keep up with technology and the job market, so she asked the city to encourage future interns to work toward an associate’s degree.

The city and school district also highlighted their goals for the next few years.

According to Martin, the city plans on focusing its efforts toward:

*Developing key areas in aging shopping centers, such as Furneaux Creek Mall and Belt Line Road

*Sustaining its economic base

*Pursuing future development and redevelopment

*Improving the infrastructure in older neighborhoods

“We must also monitor federal and state legislation to protect our city’s interests,” he said.

The school district presented its goals:

*Increasing the number of students taking advanced placement (AP) courses

*Aiming to be a recognized school district

*Providing more opportunities for students to take dual credit courses and offer online courses

*Increasing the amount of qualified teachers and provide them with the best training possible

*Starting a 9th grade initiative for smaller classes

“We want to get our kids prepared for their world, not our world,” Griffin said. “The world is changing so fast that our kids our going to constantly be learning. We want them to be lifelong learners.”
