Boys basketball roundup

Published: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:19 PM CST
Plano Senior head coach Tom Inman said he won’t give up on his team’s playoff hopes until the final whistle is blown at the end of the Wildcats’ 14th district game.

And while Plano is still mathematically alive to be one of the top four teams in District 9-5A, those hopes grew a little slimmer Tuesday night as the Wildcats lost to Allen, 47-44.

The game was tight throughout as Allen clung to a 16-15 lead at the half. The Eagles extended their advantage in the third quarter before hanging on for a 47-44 victory.

Plano junior Rex Burkead led all scorers with 15 points, while seniors Anil Pillai and Reggie Britton each had seven. The Wildcats are three games back for the final playoff spot with six games remaining, but would have to leapfrog three teams to make postseason.

Those same playoff concerns don’t exist for Plano West and Plano East as the two squads are first and second, respectively, in the district.

The Wolves throttled Richardson, 67-38, after jumping out to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter. Sophomore Bakari Turner led all scorers with 13 points while senior Ross Self and junior Tyler Melville each notched nine points.

West led Richardson by 14 at the half and put the game away by outscoring the Eagles, 15-5, in the third quarter. Assisted by eight points from sophomore Jackson Jeffcoat and six from junior Jimmie Jones, the Wolves captured the 27-point win.

East stayed one game back of West in the district Tuesday night as the Panthers defeated Lake Highlands, 72-57. The Wildcats scored 22 points in the first quarter to take a five-point lead, but it was all East from there.

“Lake Highlands came out and knocked the bottom out of the net out,” said Doug Bleadorn, East head coach. “But to our guys’ credit, the defense buckled down and didn’t give up as many second and third chances after that.”

The usual suspects were in effect for East as seniors John West, Kevin Smith and Anthony Hill paced the squad with 21, 16 and 13 points, respectively. The Panthers outscored the Wildcats, 55-35, in the final three quarters.

“The kids played well tonight,” Bleadorn said. “Everyone executed and we were able to stretch out our lead as the game went on.”

All three teams are in action Friday as Plano hosts Lake Highlands and East hosts West.
