Huckabee attracts old and new supporters at Collin College

Published: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 11:19 PM CST
Some said it was a classic rooting of the underdog yesterday as a crowd of nearly 2,000 people showed up at Collin College to support Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential run. Others said the support just showed the propaganda of the media.

“I think the media perceives it as the Democrats being more aggressive than Republicans right now,” said Preston Ridge High School student Wells Hinejosa. “The media is just focusing on Obama and Clinton because they’re the first black man and the first woman.” Hinejosa said Obama and Clinton’s rivalry may be history in the making but it shouldn’t take away credit from the Republican Party.

Huckabee, who was there to promote his campaign for the Texas primaries on March 4, was greeted and cheered by a crowd ranging from students to senior adults.

For some people like Tom Aud, the support for Huckabee went a long way back.

“We’re originally from Arkansas and now live in Plano,” Aud said. “Mike Huckabee went to the same college as I did. We support his political stance. I think he has a plan that will work.”

Others came to gain some insight on Huckabee’s views and opinions on war, taxes and illegal immigrants for the first time.

Kevin Dockery said, “I haven’t gotten real excited about either of the Republicans this year so I’m out here to learn a little bit more about Mike.”

For some, the impact of the event was strong enough to increase their support for Huckabee.

“I’m rooting for him more and more now,” said Donna Beard. “He’s got more experience governing than the rest of the candidates. That’s a big plus for me.”

Hinejosa echoed Beard’s sentiments, saying that he started out supporting Democrat John Edwards but started leaning toward Huckabee after Edwards dropped out.

Collin College president Cary Israel said the biggest benefit of holding such an event at Collin College was to provide important civic lessons to students.

“It’s important for students to see that their votes do count,” he said. Israel added that the Collin College campus has polling places now where students can see the political process in action.

The event also gave hope to Huckabee’s supporters that after losing out to McCain in several states, he can still get back in the groove if he scores in Texas.

Beard said, “If we trust the process, he still has a chance. But if everybody tries to second guess how everything’s going to play out…that would undermine it.”

Aud said nobody can say what will happen but his hope is not gone yet.

“After this, I’m hoping he can at least stay until the convention,” he said.

Others, like Dockery, said the outcome of the primaries won’t change their loyalty.

“I don’t think his chances are good at all,” Dockery said. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t come out and vote for him.”

" I think this article does a good job to show how Huckabee will fare as the candidate. He appeals to moderates as well as conservatives. His values appeal to me, a Catholic voter. He has experience, he is well spoken and he has a good plan for his time in the executive office. "

" I think Huckabee is GREAT! What a Charismatic and Inspirational Candidate. He's the only chance the GOP has to bead Hillary or Obama this fall. McCain is too sleepy, and has been in Washington too long. He's an insider. We need Huckabee and his wonderful ideas to clean up Washington. The Fair Tax is a great way to bring jobs into the USA and boost the Economy! Also, Huckabee's the only candidate that signed a PLEDGE NEVER TO GIVE AMNESTY TO ILLEGAL ALIENS. McCain is far to liberal on immigration and refuses to secure our borders. Huckabee has a plan to build a fence, and is the only candidate endorsed by the Minute Men (volunteers who patrol our borders). We need to support Huckabee because he's the only candidate that is a true conservative, and he is the only candidate that supports a National Right to Life Amendment. McCain does not! And, Huckabee's the only candidate that balanced a budget for 10 years! He inherited a state that had $200 million in Debt, yet when he left office the state had $800 million in the Bank. I would love to see him turn our economy around too. He's the only one with the proven record that knows how to do this!

" I think Huckabee has strong morals and he's never backed away from his beliefs that says alot about his character. His record in Arknsas is impressive, his ideas and policies would lead this country back to prosperity. I agree with another poster Huckabee's appeal reaches out to moderate and even democrats, it's not just right wing conservatives that support Huckabee. The majority who hear his message support him. Go Mike! "

" As the Americans think that Obama is the first black candidate running for the office of the Presidency. That is so wrong, since the media turned a blind eye to Alan Keyes, who was black and Roman Catholic. Seems that the media puts forward who they want USA to have as their president and they put him in with all the media attention. But what Americans need to think "What Would Jesus Do" to all questions in life, and politics. I can only say that Alan Keyes and Mike Huckabee have not strayed from what Jesus would have us have in our country. I believe Mike Huckabee has a change if the Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox and non-denominational Christians all vote for Mike. I believe the old saying "We have to be held accountable for all we say and do, and that goes to say, "how we also vote". I realize no one wants to think to their judgement day with Jesus but they will have to be answerable to how they voted and why. We have an opportunity to save America. So now Jesus gave us a candidate for us, VOTE FOR MIKE. God will bless us for doing that one action. "

" GO MIKE! We love you in OHIO! You have the ideals and values that best reflect middle America. Thanks for sticking in there and giving us a REAL CHOICE! Your humor, fresh insight, American values, and strength remind me so much of Reagan. Hang in there - we need you!

There is something very wrong with a primary system that allows a handful of states (and the media) to decide for the other 45!! There should be one and ONLY ONE NATIONAL PRIMARY ELECTION DAY ESTABLISHED - (just like our National General Election Day) - so EVERY VOTER has an EQUAL opportunity to choose from the SAME LIST OF CANDIDATES!! We no longer live in the horse & buggy era - TV debates will do just fine to get across candidates' positions on issues NATIONALLY! Otherwise, 85% of VOTERS become DISENFRANCHISED. Why does this seem perfectly OK with everyone - especially the 45 short-changed states? Why isn't Congress protecting this basic American right? "

" The republican party need to nominate Huckabee. Many liberals in the blue states had crossed voted for McCain in the trick will put a Democrat President in the whithouse.

McCain therefore is not a Conservative choice. His Presidency will not return blessings to USA.

Huckabee should be the correct GOP nominee. He would be able to excite the young people to vote for Values and divine blessings.

An Obama Presidency will bring USA down the path of disaster like Zimbawe. It's not a joke. Mugabe marxist policies is very simliar to Obama's. "

" I would have voted for Alen Keyes and NEVER saw them give that man a chance...It disgusts me and it is the media that plays people up or down like was commented here already ...
In this case, all I see on the news is about Obama, who I lovingly call, Obama-nation, because we DON'T need one and because I like him so very little and Hillary, who, what can I say...Lord help us...
Give me Huckabee, or Alen Keyes...They sure wouldn't give Keyes a chance and then go on about Obama being black...Ticks me off, and Huckabee the media hates too...The media in our country doesn't want a Godly man in office for sure..Securing our borders they sure hate too? Go figure!...
I ask the question here? Is McCain a democrat in disguise or what? He sure seems like it and is the only candidate the media pushes on the republican side at all?...
They don't want to give anyone worth actually voting for a chance AT ALL...
A country of the people, by the people and FOR the people...Yeah, right!...
Even my 8 year old grandson told everyone in the family recently..."They tell us we're free and have rights, but it isn't really true, they just want us to think that"...Even the children notice...
That pretty much discribes our liberal dominated country, where less than 10%, of the population rams their agendas on abortion, homosexual marriage, securing our borders, the family, and you name it down the throat of ALL the rest of the population...God help us...
Keep praying folks... "

" Right on the mark. After I complained to Yahoo about the biased internet reporting they responded by sending me an Huckabee Alert email several times a week. They still don't get it. Some of the ones you click onto go to Hillorama and others only keep reiterating that Mike should quit. If Mike even just gets on the ballot he has my vote. McCain is going to throttle himself before then. "

" I got to see Mike Huckabee in Waco! It was so exciting. There were hundreds of people that couldn't fit in the room. They waiting out in the halls. Mike is a true champion for the people. I'am sure the last few weeks have not been easy for him. But he is staying so we have a choice. I believe he is the only choice! As a Christian, I've never had a clearer choice. I can't wait until I get to vote. And for the first time in my life, I'am going to check out how the caucus works. Mike has inspired thousands of people to get involved with this election that never had any experience with the process before ,except to vote. He inspires me and is the only one I trust to lead this country. "

" Mike Huckabee should be the Nominee
for President and then the PRESIDENT!
The Republican base and the Media has been unfair from day ONE to Huckabee.
The Republican base is wanting Romney for VP and the Media sucked up to Romney over Mike Huckabee.
They have wanted him to drop out a long time ago, that is so un-American not to want the states left to vote to have a choice.( are we in Russia?) I believe this issue should be addressed to the Republican party, talk about wanting to fix a vote for a candiate.
Please everyone that wants Mike Huckabee, even if he should not make it, still complain, because they will do this every election year towards someone rhar don't want. "

Vote the person. Vote the issues. Vote your principles. "
