9-5A dominates top 20 softball poll
Talk among many in the Metroplex is that District 9-5A is one of the stronger, if not the strongest, softball districts in the state. And the newest Texas Girls Coaches Association poll appears to back that up as five of the eight teams in 9-5A are listed in the state’s top 20.
Leading the way is Plano East at No. 10. The Lady Panthers ascended to the top 10 from No. 14 after defeating Plano West, which fell to No. 16. In between those cross-town foes, both geographically and in the polls, is Plano Senior. The Lady Wildcats are ranked No. 15.
Rounding out the top 20 are Wylie and Allen. Both teams started district play 2-0 and are tied for the No. 20 spot. It’s still early, but at least one of these top 20 state teams will not make the playoffs.
Rebels looking for players
The Lone Star Rebels 12 and Under Baseball club, the 2007 USSSA State Champion, is looking for one select player.
The team is going to Cooperstown this year to compete against 96 other teams (cooperstowndreamspark.com).
If you would like to earn a place on the team to make the trip call Pickens Brady at: 214-502-5516.
Panthers end year ranked No. 6
After one of the most successful year’s in program history, Plano East ended the 2007-08 season ranked No. 6 in the state in the final Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
The only team ranked ahead of East that didn’t make the Class 5A State Tournament is Duncanville, which was ranked No. 1 in the state before losing to eventual state champion North Crowley in the Region I Semifinals.
The Panthers advanced to the Region II Finals before falling to Klein Forest, which ended the year ranked No. 3.
Melville signs with Colgate
2007 Plano West graduate Sterling Melville spent the past season with The Hun School. However, the former Wolves swingman will spend next season scoring for Colgate, having signed Thursday.
Melville finished his career at West as the leading scorer with 1,269 points, and ranked second in rebounds (560) and steals (119).
Plano baseball holds golf tourney
Plano Senior is wrapping up the year-long project of updating the Wildcats baseball field.
The team has added a new locker room, a coach’s office and new covered hitting facility, making three in total. Plano also built and irrigated a practice field for the Junior Varsity squad.
The Wildcats are also looking out for the fans as there are new bleacher seats available as well as wooden fences down the first and third base lines.
The booster club and its members are responsible for the project, and the Wildcats are hoping their semi-annual golf tournament, rescheduled for Monday at Twin Creeks Country Club, can help the fundraising efforts.
In addition to the baseball team’s tournament, the lacrosse club is holding a tournament at 1 p.m. Both tournaments have a $400 registration fee for a foursome with corporate sponsorships available for $100 per hole.
All baseball tournament proceeds will go to help pay for continued renovations on the field, while the money raised at the lacrosse event will go to fund everything from hiring referees to field rentals.
