Plano International Festival

Published: Friday, May 23, 2008 5:09 PM CDT
The City of Plano and the Plano International Festival Corporation are partnering to host the Fourth Annual 2008 Plano International Festival taking place in Haggard Park in downtown Plano on Oct. 4. Festival events will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Festival is underwritten by the City of Plano and is designed to promote awareness of cultural diversity and facilitate communication between the different cultural groups that make up Plano, Collin County and their surroundings.

“Plano and the surrounding area is an incredibly diverse area,” said Linda Adler, vice president of the Plano International Festival. “It is a good chance for the community to enjoy and experience some of the different cultures that make up Plano.”

The Plano International Festival was created by Plano’s Multicultural Outreach Roundtable to showcase and celebrate the many cultures represented by the people of Plano. It is designed to promote awareness of cultural diversity and facilitate communication between all cultural groups.

According to data from past festivals, attendance has increased 70 percent since the first International Festival in 2005.

“Last year’s festival attracted more than 8,500 people from and around the Plano community, and we’re expecting at least 10,000 people this year,” Adler said. “It’s wonderfully overwhelming to see all these people interested in learning about and experiencing different cultures.”

The Festival is a free and family friendly event that takes visitors on a tour of the world right in downtown Plano. Attendees can see Plano’s diversity through multicultural music and dance performances, cultural displays, international cuisine, children’s activities, a Parade of Nations, a naturalization ceremony and more.

The Parade of Nations, a walking procession of flags representing more than 100 countries from around the world, will kick off the start of the International Festival.

More than 60 different cultures were represented in last year’s festival. Several communities of cultures set up booths that show visitors the cultural art, music and foods. Many of the booths will offer cultural arts and crafts for sale.

The ethnic food court is a popular attraction for people of all ages, offering foods from nine vendors from different areas of the world. Past festivals have seen foods from Puerto Rico, Turkey, Thailand and Ethiopia.

A children’s area will also be set up for games, puppet shows and children’s crafts.

“What’s neat about the festival is that all these vendors and performers and artisans are from and around Plano,” Adler said.
