Flower Mound recently found itself in the position of having more recyclable items than it could handle.

The town’s Recycles Day event, hosted May 17 at Home Depot, turned out to be more successful than the event planners had expected. As a result, the town will host Recycles Day II, a continuation and smaller-scale version of the original event, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at Gerault Park, located at 1200 Gerault Road.

Ernie Goucher, the coordinator of Keep Flower Mound Beautiful, said there were 770 cars served at the event.

“There were cars backed up as far as you could see,” Goucher said. “It was fabulous. It shows the awareness of the Flower Mound residents and that they want to do the right thing by recycling instead of throwing things in the creek or letting them get into the landfills.”

But, the large turnout caused all of the contractors’ trucks and trailers to become full, and many residents were unable to drop off their items to be recycled.

Goucher said there were five tons of documents shredded and 37,000 pounds of electronic waste turned in. She said she hasn’t received numbers of other recycled items, such as paint and pesticide.

“It was overwhelming,” Goucher said. “We ran out of trailer space for hazardous waste and paper.”

The town is encouraging only those who attended Recycles Day on May 17 but were not served to attend the recycling event Saturday since the staff will be limited to half the number from the first event two weeks ago. A voucher from the previous event is not required, but proof of residence is.

Residents will be able to dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic waste, as well as have documents shredded.
