Barrage of points not enough for Plano

Published: Saturday, July 12, 2008 6:31 PM CDT
Plano Senior was picked by some to win it all this weekend at the FSN Southwest 7-on-7 State Tournament, and senior quarterback Carson Meger had such a good tournament, his name was mentioned for MVP.

But after a perfect 3-0 record on Friday, the Wildcats winning streak ended at five electric games.

“We are certainly disappointed that we didn’t get further,” said Jaydon McCullough. “But we were very proud of the way our kids competed and acted. From when we went out to dinner, to when we got back to the hotel and even when we were picking up the trash after our last game, our kids acted right the entire time.”

McCullough said Meger “was lights out” throughout Saturday’s events, unwilling to lose and sticking to the Wildcats’ plan.

He helped guide Plano to 156 points in three games, and an impressive blowout victory over Sulphur Springs.

But included in the offensive explosion, was the remainder of the “Tenacious Trio.”

“Rex [Burkhead], Kris [Lott] and Carson were the big players for us today,” McCullough said. “They were the main factors in what we were able to do on offense and when we were down, they wouldn’t let us give up.”

Plano trailed early in the first game of the day.

At the halftime break, Wichita Falls held a 33-26 lead, but that did not last long.

With no time left on the clock, sophomore receiver Holt Hoetger was barreled over by a defender trying to catch a pass in the end zone.

Since the game cannot end on a defensive penalty, the Wildcats got an extra play and broke the 54-54 tie with a score to win 60-54.

“We all sprinted out onto the field after that game,” McCullough said. “It was a pretty emotional win because it would have gone into overtime and it was the first game of the day so we were relieved to get that one out of the way.”

The Wildcats were then matched-up with Sulphur Springs in what McCullough called their best game of the weekend.

With a 70-51 outcome, it would certainly appear that the Wildcats had a little something going for them.

“We were just clicking on all eight cylinders,” McCullough said. “All of our offensive guys were contributing and our defense was playing well too.”

Kelton Reed had a couple of good catches and Holt had a nice long catch-and-run which helped.

“They have a pretty good quarterback over there,” McCullough said. “So it was nice to come away with that win.”

The final game against Colleyville was not as joyous of an occasion as the Wildcats struggled early in the first half to get any offense going. Trailing 13-26 in the first half, Plano knew they had to put it together in the second half if they wished to continue.

“We looked a little better on offense in the second half,” McCullough said. “But I have to give credit to Colleyville, they did an exceptional job defending us. When you get to this level, the teams are going to be better and you have to expect a tough game.”

Despite a 39-26 loss, McCullough found various positives in the Wildcats’ game.

“I was proud to be associated with those young men,” he said. “We have to come back and go to work now. We have to get ready for our scrimmage against Mesquite and then get ready four that first one against Irving MacArthur.

“We’re counting down the hours now.”
