Volunteer donates award money to Dallas charity
By Kim Nguyen, Staff Writer
Plano resident Brenda Mahon donated $10,000 to the Downtown Pregnancy Center in Dallas after winning a Community Service Award from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, which recognized her 14 years of volunteer service.
Mahon was one of only eight associates of MassMutual selected to receive the Community Service Award because of her close work with the Downtown Pregnancy Center in Dallas for 14 years.
More than 5,000 MassMutual employees and financial advisors were eligible for the award.
“We are thrilled, appreciative, excited and very, very grateful for Brenda’s generous contribution,” said Carolyn Cline, DPC director. “It speaks volumes of her commitment to the Downtown Pregnancy Center to donate the entire award amount.”
When Mahon heard of a group of women trying to organize a support system for pregnant women, she was eager to be involved.
Driven by her own experiences, Mahon was one of the original volunteers who saw a growing need for support for women who did not have the resources to obtain help or funding with an unexpected pregnancy.
“She saw the need and helped visualize the Center to what we have today,” Cline said. “There’s really no surprise that Brenda donated this large amount of money because she is very aware of the organization’s funds and how much is needed.”
Mahon’s $10,000 donation to DPC will be used toward general operating funds of the non-profit organization.
“I am always looking for ways to help n be it through monthly donations or involvement with fundraising events,” Mahon said. “The DPC is a great and needed service that helps so many women and their families.”
Mahon said the DPC is continually trying to expand their services and would eventually like to see the organization open a pre-natal clinic to provide more help and medical attention to women and families with unexpected pregnancies.
“We help provide a much needed service and help improve the lives of everyone involved,” Mahon said. “It is a passion and I am thrilled to be involved. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
The Downtown Pregnancy Center in Dallas has offered services including pregnancy testing, educational classes, sonograms, pregnancy verification for Medicaid, screening for sexually transmitted diseases and maternity and baby items free of charge to woman who may be experiencing an unexpected pregnancy. The non-profit organization estimates that 7,200 women have been treated and helped since its induction in 1994.
