The 4th annual Heroes for Children 5K Run/Walk, presented by WFAA, will be held on Saturday, September 13th at The Shops at Legacy in Plano.
The 5K Race/Walk will take place on Saturday morning, Sept. 13 with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. The -mile Family Fun Run will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8:15 a.m.
Plano Mayor Pat Evans will serve as Honorary Chair of the event and declare Sept. 13 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Day in the city of Plano. Steve Stoler of WFAA will be the emcee the event again this year.
Eddie Coker, the award-winning children’s entertainer will perform, and there will be bounce houses, and other fun activities for the family.
Individuals can register for the 5K Run/Walk or the 1mile Family Fun run event by visiting the Heroes for Children web site at http://www.heroesforchildren.org/5k.html .
Early registration (by Sept. 5) is $20 for adults, $10 for kids under 12; Regular registration (Sept. 6-8) is $22 for adults, $12 for kids under 12; Race day registration is $25 for adults and $15 for kids under 12.
Heroes for Children is a nonprofit organization providing financial and social assistance to families, within the state of Texas, who have children battling cancer. Since inception in 2005, Heroes for Children has successfully donated more than $1 million dollars to families in Texas, and to date, has never denied a request. The 5K Race is one of five activities that Heroes for Children has each year to help raise funds.

Historic Downtown Plano Art Galleries host 5th Annual Trick Art Treat
Art Galleries and Studios in historic downtown Plano celebrate fall with their fifth annual Trick Art Treat Gallery Night on Friday, Oct. 24 from 7 to 10 p.m.
The evening features special exhibitions, refreshments and entertainment free of charge to the public around the 15th Street area.
“There is so much going on in the local arts community. Trick Art Treat is a great opportunity to come and experience all the vibrant art that is going on right here in downtown Plano,” said Tony Holman, owner and master artist of Holman Pottery. “For one night, guests can enjoy it all n it’s a great evening with something for everyone.”

selected As 2008 Dallas Business Journal HealthCare Hero
The Dallas Business Journal recently released its 2008 Healthcare Heroes, and Dr. John Bond, founder and CEO of 6 Day Dental & Orthodontics, was honored with the “Innovator Award.” This award honors individuals or organizations for breakthroughs in healthcare technology, research or delivery.
Bond has created the first successful privately owned, multi-office dental practice in North Texas, serving patients six days a week. Summer Dress Code remains in effect for September -- "dressy casual" for men and women. Dress slacks and shirt with collar for men; ties and coats are optional. No T-shirts, no golf shirts, no shorts, no sports clothing. For C&W night, western wear is the attire.

This is a senior center and according to the City of Plano Ruling, the minimum age is 50 to attend dances. Spouses and employees excepted.
There are dance hosts to dance with unescorted ladies.

Children’s Chorus of Collin County schedules final audition for New York City tour
New York City will be the final destination for the 2008-2009 performance schedule of the Children’s Chorus of Collin County. This year’s final auditions date is Thursday evening, August 28th at the St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 5801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano. Boys and girls in grades 4-8 are invited to audition. This non-profit chorus performs a variety of the best in children's choral literature. Qualifications are a good voice, a love for music and, a desire to grow artistically, musically, and personally.

Boys Choir invited to sing at Nokia Theater; audition now
The “Boys of the Chorus,” a ensemble from the Children’s Chorus of Collin County, has received an invitation to sing at the Nokia Theater for the November 29th Christmas Celebration performance by “Casting Crowns.”
Any boy in grades 4-8 is invited to audition for the Children’s Chorus. Those who join the Chorus will be eligible to participate in the “The Boys of the Chorus” ensemble. All Chorus members for the 2008-2009 year are eligible to participate in the New York City tour next summer.
Participation in the Chorus requires a good singing voice, a love for music and a desire to grow artistically, musically, and personally. Auditions are Thursday evening, Aug. 28 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 5801 W. Plano Parkway in Plano. Plano students receives scholarship to attend Southwestern University
Georgetown -- Iris Schendstok of Plano has received a Mood Scholarship to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown. Mood Scholarships are merit scholarships of between $7,001 and $13,000 a year.
Schendstok is the daughter of Fred and Irma Schendstok of Plano, Texas. She graduated from Plano Senior High School in May. Schendstok plans to major in psychology and biochemistry.
Southwestern University is a selective, nationally recognized undergraduate liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1,260 students. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas. For information on Southwestern, visit www.southwestern.edu.
Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra Holding Auditions Sept. 7
MCKINNEY -- Young musicians will gather from across North Texas at the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) Sept. 7 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. when Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra (CTYO) holds auditions for the 2008-2009 season.
Auditions are open to musicians in elementary school through high school from Collin County and surrounding counties. Application fee is $20.
CTYO has five orchestras, designed for various levels of musical ability and each performs a wide range of repertoire, from music of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods to Folk and Contemporary styles. The orchestras include:
* Magnolia n A beginning string ensemble, appropriate for students with one to three years of experience who demonstrate a beginning level of technical and musical proficiencies.
* Live Oak n An intermediate string ensemble, appropriate for students with three to six years of experience who demonstrate a beginning level of technical and musical proficiencies.
* Cypress n A large and more advanced symphonic ensemble, comprised of traditional string instruments, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, and normally composed of students with at least five years of experience who demonstrate fully competent music reading skills and instrumental techniques.
* Guitar n The first of its kind in North Texas, the CTYO Guitar Orchestra is designed to promote the development of ensemble skills involving the full range of instruments in the guitar family. Basic music reading and guitar skills are required and CTYO Guitar Orchestra is open to students age 8-18 who demonstrate a strong interest in playing in a large guitar ensemble.
* Tweneboa Drum n An ensemble for young people of all ages and their family members, this orchestra is comprised of African, Afro-Cuban, and Latin-American drums and percussion. Each member of this orchestra will also learn to play the African flute, which will be provided to each participant as a part of their tuition. Basic music reading skills are helpful but not required.
“This is one of the most exciting times of the year for our organization,” said CTYO Artistic Director and CEO Dr. Jeff Walter. “We are continually amazed at the amount of talent among these young musicians. And as the Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra becomes more popular, the numbers continue to increase.”
