Plano Diversity initiatives and successes to be celebrated at MCOR reception
By Kim Nguyen,Staff Writer
In anticipation of the largest cultural festival in Plano, the Plano Multi-Cultural Outreach Roundtable (MCOR) has partnered with the Plano International Festival to hose the Second Annual MCOR Reception at the Center for American and International Law.
The reception includes a brief pane discussion on diversity; a review of MCOR’s mission, recent successes and vision for the future; and an open forum where key leadership can gather and converse in an informal setting. The supporting sponsor is H-E-B, who for the last two years has supported Plano’s multi-cultural efforts. The MCOR reception was founded as a private event to precede the Plano International Festival.
“We want to celebrate the different ways the MCOR has helped the City of Plano promote cultural diversity in the community,” said Jacqueline Scimemi, Cultural Affairs and Diversity Chair for MCOR. “We have put together countless events and are always looking for more ideas to promote cultural community interaction.”
“The Plano International Festival has grown to be on of the most valuable and biggest events for the City of Plano,” Scimemi said. “The growing popularity is exciting because it brings Plano residents beyond cultural borders together.”
The Plano Multi-Cultural Outreach has put together numerous events to promote the cultural diversity of Plano. The Committee has arranged for several “outreaches” where Plano residents of different nationalities can meet and greet with the city officials.
“The successful outreaches that we’ve held were for the Hispanic and Asian/Pan-Asian and Muslim communities,” Shimemi said. “It was beneficial because they were able to see that the city and government is interested in the community’s diversity.”
MCOR also played a part in bringing more table tennis tables to the city’s recreational centers.
“We are extra proud of the table tennis tables because two children from Plano competed in a table tennis competition and went pretty far,” Scimemi said.
Tim Wang and Anurag Matharasi were both given special recognition at the Aug. 11 meeting of the Plano City Council for their participation in the 2008 USA Table Tennis Open Championship.
“The reception will be a dynamic event that will bring together government officials, corporate leaders, community leaders and some residents,” Scimemi said. “A lot of ideas are sure to develop with everybody mingling together for one common cause.”
The Second Annual MCOR Reception will be on Aug. 28 and will be held at the Center for American and International Law in Plano. MCOR invites corporate leaders, government officials and community leadership to come together and celebrate Plano’s diversity as well as explore how leadership can work together to support the community unity in Plano.
