On Aug. 19, Plano Animal Services received notification that a bat in the Plano Parkway and Mira Vista area has tested positive for Rabies.
Any mammal may become infected with the rabies virus and develop symptoms, including humans. Most animals can be infected by the virus and can transmit the disease to humans. Infected bats, monkeys, raccoons, foxes, skunks, cattle, wolves, dogs or cats provide the greatest risk to humans.
Bats, in particular, are at a high risk of spreading Rabies. With that in mind, Plano Animal Services would like to offer these helpful tips to prevent infection.
* Do not touch injured, sick or dead bats. Contact Plano Animal Services at 972-769-4360 for help.
* If you have had contact with a bat, or any animal thought to be affected by Rabies, you may need to seek medical attention
* Teach children to avoid contact with bats
