Plano: Fitness classes begin for seniors

Published: Tuesday, September 9, 2008 4:46 PM CDT
Plano seniors begin another round of fitness classes specifically designed for them.

Fall classes for the Plano Senior Center began Monday. Classes are open to citizens 50 and up. Among the fitness classes offered are above and below the belt, a muscle-conditioning class, cardio tone, which offers low-impact aerobic movements, and a senior sampler class.

The senior sampler class samples a little bit of each class offered. From aerobic moves to chair yoga, participants can attend the class and get a glimpse of what the other fitness classes will offer.

Cindy Harrison-Staub, Master of Science, instructs the sampler class that meets Mondays at 10 a.m. Harrison-Staub is a certified personal trainer who has over 20 years experience in the fitness industry. She said the sampler class incorporates step, cardio, strength training, and stretching.

As class begins that first Monday morning, the seven ladies in attendance gather the equipment needed for the class. A chair, weights, a medicine ball, a band, and a step, used to mimic stairs. After a 15 minute warm-up, the women pick up their weights to engage in bicep curls, hammer curls, and a grapevine. Movements used in warm-up are incorporated into the workouts.

“I like to take it slow the first class so they can get used to the class,” Harrison-Staub said. “The most important thing is to keep moving.”

The medicine ball is used for a dribbling exercise that Harrison-Staub said works to improve hand-eye coordination. Next up for the class are exercises with the band. The ladies use it to do lunges, jabs, and other workouts. The best part of working with the band is that the individual is in charge of how hard the workout is.

Toward the end of the 50 minute class, Harrison-Staub leads the group in a cool down which includes stretching and yoga moves.

“I love this class,” Pat Mead said. “I’ve taken this class before and the first two-three days, it’s hard, then it’s just a good workout.”

Seniors interested in taking classes can still register for classes that have open spots. For more information on fall classes contact 972-941-7155.
