LHS senior scores perfect ACT score
By Chris Roark, Staff Writer
Perhaps it was the lack of pressure Emily White faced when she took the ACT test last year that led to her acing it.
Or, maybe she's just that smart.
White, a senior at Lewisville High School, is still in disbelief after learning in August she recorded a perfect score of 36 on the ACT test in June.
"The school district pays for the test, so I went ahead and took it," White said. "I thought, why not? It can't hurt. At first, I wasn't even going to take it."
After graduation, White will be headed to Brigham Young University, and the college doesn't require an ACT score for acceptance.
It does require a high SAT score, though. But she has a history of mastering that test, too. She scored a 1530 on the exam, which included a perfect score on the reading portion of the test. That followed a perfect composite score on the PSAT test last school year. That allowed her to become a National Merit Semifinalist.
The perfection extends to her Advanced Placement (AP) exams as well. She has scored a perfect five on her US history, English language and English literature tests and a four on her world history test. Scoring three or better allows her to receive automatic college credit in those classes.
White plans to take the AP test in government, calculus, economics and possibly psychology, and should she score at least a three, she would add college credits for four more classes. She would essentially be a college sophomore before she walks the stage at high school graduation.
Regardless of the class load, White is guaranteed free tuition at BYU because of her ACT perfect score. All that, and she said she wasn't even prepared.
"I was really tired that day," White said. "How can a day like that turn out with such good results?"
White said there wasn't a lot of preparation to do, either. She looked at sample ACT questions online, but that was about it.
"It was just a combination of good test-taking skills and good teachers who taught us what we need to know to take the test," White said. "If I didn't do great, I wasn't going to worry about it. That's why I was surprised, I really didn't even prepare."
White said the toughest part of the test was the science portion since it contained a lot of biology questions.
"That was freshman year, so it was hard to remember that," White said. "That's when I really felt a time crunch."
White said the easiest part for her was the revision/editing portion, which requires correcting an underlined set of sentences.
White is one of 17 students in Texas to have a perfect score on the ACT out of about 20,500 students who took the test. Nationally, only 162 students achieved the feat.
White said she plans on majoring in medical engineering at BYU and hopes to get her master's in biomedical engineering. She wants to use her degree to design prosthetics, hearing aides and other medical products to help the disabled.
