Celina trumps Trojans, loses Waldrep

Published: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:03 PM CDT
The Celina football team won its 45th consecutive regular-season game Friday. The defending state champs haven’t lost a non-district contest since 1998. But all is not well in Bobcat country.

Senior running back Charley Waldrep - tabbed by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football as the 3A preseason player of the year - left the game with an apparent high ankle sprain in the latter stages of the second quarter in the 28-7 victory over Trinity Christian-Addison. Waldrep will miss Friday’s game against 2A Daingerfield and is out indefinitely. His status for the final two non-district affairs against Ft. Worth Arlington Heights and Whitehouse is doubtful.

Waldrep, who rushed for 94 yards and the game’s opening touchdown, originally suffered the injury Aug. 8 during two-a-days. But after a quick rehab stint and some rest he appeared to be in top physical form during the season opener against Lytle even though he only carried the ball three times.

In the short term, senior Troy McCartney’s workload will be increase greatly. Sophomore Jose Romero will also factor into the mix. Quarterback Cody Worrell will also see his number called more on designed runs. And that is a good place to start, just ask TCA.

Worrell racked up a game-high 108 yards on the ground on 17 attempts, while McCartney averaged 6.6 yards per carry. Romero didn’t catch a single pass, but made up for it with a career high 10 carries. As a team, Celina (2-0) pounded the Trojans with a running attack that chewed up yards and drained the clock. The Bobcats gained 350 total yards on the ground on 59 rushes. Worrell took to the air 13 times, completing four of them for 71 yards.

After Waldrep’s flying leap into the end zone on the second possession of the first quarter capped a 55-yard drive and put Celina up 7-0 with 3:22 remaining, Worrell orchestrated a back-breaking drive that put the TCA defense to the test. Following the team’s second punt of the game, the Bobcats took over at their own 5-yard line and marched the length of the field in 12 plays. Some six minutes later, Worrell jammed his way up the middle on an extended sneak to give Celina a 14-0 lead at the break.

Defensively, the Bobcats were on point all night long. The Trojans (1-1) managed just one first down in the first half and were limited to eight for the game. All but two of TCA’s 155 total yards came courtesy of quarterback Jonathan Catalano, who rushed for 81 yards and threw for 72 more. Catalano had a long 45-yard run in the first half and a 32-yard scoring scamper with 5:21 left in the in the third quarter for the visitors’ only touchdown of the contest. Aside from those two big plays, the Celina defense was as stingy as ever.

Worrell added his second rushing touchdown early in the third quarter from a yard out, but Catalano and TCA responded.

After the Trojan defense buckled down and got the ball back with a chance to cut the deficit to a single score, the Bobcats were on high alert. But an interception by senior defensive back Josh Lavey on a double bobble deep in Celina territory gave the home team the ball back with just over 9 minutes to go in the game. Seven minutes later, Romero scored his second touchdown of the season on a 1-yard run to put the tilt out of reach.

Next up for Celina is Daingerfield. The game was originally schedule for 7 p.m. Saturday in Royse City, but Hurricane Ike forced a change of plans. The game will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bobcat Field.

Daingerfield (2-0) is ranked 14th in the Associated Press Class 2A state poll and is best known by Celina fans as the team that snapped the state-record 68-game winning streak in the second round of the 2002 playoffs, 21-20. The two teams have not faced each other since. Redemption awaits.
