Seven netters recognized on all-district team
BY ANDREW MAY, Staff Writer
It was only to be expected that Frisco ISD’s footprint would be firmly imprinted on the 2008 All-District 9-4A volleyball list after three of the four schools qualified for the playoffs.
Six of the seven superlative awards handed out went to players from Liberty or Centennial. Six of the 12 names that appear on the first team come from FISD. Seven of 13 second teamers hail from Frisco, as do 12 of the 21 honorable mentions.
It was a good day at the office to say the least. Liberty’s Paris Perret, last season’s Setter of the Year in 9-3A, snagged Most Valuable Player after leading the Lady Redhawks to the regional quarterfinals in a higher classification. Teammate El Kale, who was No. 20 in the area in aces, No. 22 in kills, and No. 23 in blocks, took home the award for top blocker. Liberty senior Ashley Laible garnered Outstanding Server.
Frisco, the only FISD team not to make the playoffs, was awarded for its sportsmanship along with Denison. Lady Raccoon Sydney Campbell also snagged her second straight nod on the all-district first team. Additionally, Frisco had two second teamers and three honorable mention picks.
After making a playoff appearance for the second year in a row, Wakeland landed two players on both the first and second teams. Senior middle blocker Sydnee Hilburn collected first-team honors for the second time in as many years.
All told, Centennial was the big winner with 10 total recognitions, followed by Liberty and Wakeland with seven. Six Lady Raccoons were honored.
