Director cancels 'Rent'at Rowlett
"Rent: School Edition" will not be taking the stage at Rowlett High School in late January, according to Reavis Wortham, Garland ISD director of communications.
By Brian Bearden, Managing Editor
"Declaring that it was never Rowlett High School’s wish to be divisive, Rowlett Theater Director Brandon Tijerina notified principal Dr. Marlene Hammerle that he would cancel the school’s production of the musical Rent: School Edition during a parent meeting held after school last night, Tuesday, December 9, 2008," Wortham said.
Wortham said that in light of the recent controversy surrounding the selection of this musical, next year the Garland School District will implement a new mechanism that will review future productions for age-appropriate content and themes.

" I think that it is wrong to cancel this play.If you do not like it for some reason or another that's fine don't go and see it.If you do not want your children to see it do not allow them to see it that is fine to.But I don't think it's right to pass judgement on others and try implement your views on other people because you believe one way or another and everyone else should to.Let people live their own lives and you do the same. It's values like this that this country was built on. "

" Great - another step back to 1952. Good job, closed-minded sheep. "

" It's sad that they won't be able to produce RENT. It's an awesome show and deals with issues relevant to today's society. If anyone doesn't think that gay & lesbian issues are not present in schools today, they are living with their head in the sand.
I took my teens to see the touring show several years ago @ Bass Hall. "

" It is really sad that some of the parents are closing their eyes to what's going on in their homes with their children but don't want to educate their children. This is ridiculous to stop the production. It is really a wonderful show and with what's going on in our society it would really open your eyes and maybe your mind. "
