Anatomy of a top 10 list
BY Kevin Hageland Staff Writer
I’ve gotten quite a bit of feedback on our list of top 10 stories of the year list in Plano and I thought it might be interesting to go through the process.
Then again what I find fascinating might already have you reaching for the mouse to go elsewhere.
For those that stayed, we put together a panel of five voting individuals: myself, Cory Mageors, Andrew Snyder and gone but not forgotten intern extraordinaire TC Fleming. Rick Mann was brought in to deliberate on any deadlocks we might have.
Plano West baseball was a no-brainer for No. 1 and Nastia Liukin embracing her Plano roots so much made her a good pick at No. 2. After all, Liukin’s performance at the Olympics did solidify Plano’s spot as gymnastics capital of the world; forget that n the universe (Take that Blargon 6!).
Jaydon McCullough taking over at Plano had to be high in the mix, but there was some debate as to how Tom Inman/Phil Parlin and Plano East girls soccer played into the mix. We all agreed those were top 5 stories, but which went where?
I got a note from someone that thought the Lady Panthers should have been higher as it was a more positive story. I appreciate that point of view, but this was based strictly on news value and community interest (quite frankly I’m still bummed out at the tiny crowd that supported East in the state soccer championship).
McCullough slid into No. 3, but we were deadlocked at No. 4 and 5 with our esteemed leader breaking the tie with a vote for Inman/Parlin.
The remainder of the list is pretty straight forward, although I adamantly disagree with Andromeda dropping to No. 10. This is a club, based in Plano with several Plano ISD players, that won two national championships over the summer and they are No. 10!!!!!! I started pushing for Andromeda at every spot beginning with No. 6, but was outvoted each time. I think the club might have gotten in at No. 10 just so the rest of the room wouldn’t have to listen to me go on about Andromeda any longer.
The whole process took almost two hours and yes there were drinks involved, although they were of the soft and not alcoholic variety. I would thank Taco Bueno for sponsoring us, but they didn’t n we had to pay for the food. Thanks a lot talking Chihuahua (wow, I actually spelled that right without the aid of spell check) n wait, I think that dog is for the other taco place.
There you have it n how the top 10 was made this year. Hope you all enjoyed it and if you didn’t, I guess these lists are meant to create controversy.

" You got a panel together for the top 10 and didn't do the allcounty football team? "
