Nnaji chooses New Mexico
BY Kevin Hageland Staff Writer
As a freshman it appeared as though Plano Senior’s Chinyere Nnaji was a lock to eventually receive a college scholarship.
After all, Nnaji already had the size and displayed her talents en route to winning the district’s Newcomer of the Year award.
The promise of a college scholarship was fulfilled Wednesday when Nnaji verbally committed to New Mexico.
“New Mexico has been watching Chin since she was a freshman,” said Lynn Meger, Plano head coach. “They are bringing her in to make an impact on defense immediately and to develop her offensive game more at the (No.) 3 spot.”
Nnaji’s road to this offer wasn’t easy though as she suffered two major injuries over the last two years, first a rotator cuff then an ACL, and as a senior is playing basketball for the first prolonged period in 18 months.
While a return from those injuries means Nnaji isn’t completely back to full speed mentally and physically, what Nnaji has displayed over the past four years is more than enough to convince Meger she will be a factor at the next level.
“Obviously Chin has athletic ability, good size and speed,” she said. “But she will also be an asset as a teammate. Sometimes it’s tough to get that when you are recruiting the best player from a lot of different teams, but that’s one of the reasons they wanted Chin n for more than just her physical ability.”

" I am pulling for Chin to succeed at U. of NM. She is smooth and is easily the best player on a talented team but otherwise full of selfish starters, especially no. 21 and 33. They have no sense of team ball and are only interested in taking their own shots. "

" Agreed. Chin is no doubt the best player on the team. You know the team is in trouble when (A) The point guard (#21) brings the ball upcourt walking when her team trails by 12+ points with less than 5 minutes to play (B) The power forward (#33) decides to bring the ball upcourt (C) The point guard (#5) dribbles with no clue when or who to pass the ball to (D) There is no post play. " Chuck--you might want to check yourself before you start bashing KIDS---#21 Jade Leeks happens to my niece and is definitely a team player. I am really surprised that the Plano Star Courier would print a statement from someone who obviously has no kids on the team or has probably never been involved on sports of any level of his life!!! " Congratulations to Chin! However, I don't agree about the comment on players 21 and 33 that Mr. Reichling made! I know for a fact that #21 is a team player and plays her heart out every time she steps onto the court! Shame on Mr. Reichling for calling out these young ladies!! "
