Softball: Coppell run-rules Lewisville
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
Lewisville’s softball team may have caught Coppell at the wrong time Friday, as the Cowgirl bats exploded for 14 runs on their way to a 14-1 win in five innings.
Laura Ramos earned the win for Coppell, while Krysta O’Neal was charged with the loss for Lewisville (1-3), who falls one game behind the Cowgirls (2-2) in the District 6-5A standings.
Coppell coach Katie Krug said the team got a wake up call during the past week, when Coppell lost its first two District 6-5A games of the season. The Cowgirls had gone unbeaten in their previous 12 games, including winning their first three district games.
“We just kind of fell apart early and let it get away from us,” said Lewisville coach Lori Alexander. “If we would have played like we did in the first inning, we would have done alright. But, we just have to be more consistent about what we are doing.”
Things started well for Lewisville, as the Farmers struck first after a scoreless top of the first pitched by O’Neal.
With one out, Lewisville left fielder Ashley Reyes reached on a walk and advanced to second after an error on a fielder’s choice by Cynthia Barrerra. With two outs, Devon Duran drove in Reyes with an RBI-double, but Barrerra was tagged out in a run-down between third and home.
The Cowgirls regained the lead, however, scoring twice in the second on RBIs by Ramos and Sara Whitehead. Ramos, who struck out eight Farmers in five innings in the circle, was also 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
“She pitched well,” Alexander said. “But, we didn’t hit the ball very well, either.”
Coppell then created separation, adding five runs in the third by taking advantage of four walks, to push the lead to 7-1.
Reyes and Barrerra once again tried to spark a Farmers rally in the bottom of the third by stringing together consecutive singles with two outs, but Lewisville was unable to push any runs across, keeping the score 7-1.
The Farmers then cost themselves with two errors in the fourth inning leading to three Coppell runs before the Cowgirls batted around in the fifth to score four more runs and put the ten-run rule into play.
“We switched some things around in the game Tuesday and we didn’t have any mistakes,” Alexander said. “Today, we fielded the ball well but some throws got away. I think it was more mental than anything.”
Lewisville was retired in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
“We’re going to comeback from this,” Alexander said. “I don’t think they’re 10 runs better than us, though. We’re still right in the middle of this, so we just have to stay positive. We’re capable, it’s just a matter of being more consistent doing it.”
The Farmers earned their first district win of the season Tuesday, topping Hebron, 4-2, in Lewisville.
O’Neal started in the circle for the Farmers and earned the win.
O’Neal shutout the Hawks for the first six innings, before Hebron pitcher Heather Stearns hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
The Farmers offense was led by Devon Duran, who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Ashleigh Rye went 1-for-3 with a double, while Amanda Scott went 1-for-3. Reyes also went 1-for-1 and reached base in all three of her plate appearances.
