Softball: Marcus remains perfect in 6-5A play

Published: Friday, April 10, 2009 5:04 PM CDT
Marcus’ softball team kept their perfect district record in tact Thursday as the Lady Marauders pulled away from Lewisville late to win a District 6-5A game, 7-2.

Marcus’ Heather Foust started in the circle, tossing a complete game on her way to the win. She allowed a run in the top of the first inning and would not surrender another run until the top of the seventh.

“We kind of knew that Lewisville would be hungry coming out,” said Marcus coach Christy Tumilty. “They were able to put some things together early, but I was proud of our team for staying composed, not panicking and putting a couple of runs on early to regain the lead.”

Lewisville pitcher Alyssa Barker, who just a week ago was hurling fastballs at the junior varsity level, started for the first time on varsity, tossing four strong innings. Barker previously entered in relief for the varsity team Tuesday.

Thursday, Barker surrendered three runs on six hits before giving way to Krysta O’Neal.

“She did a good job,” said Lewisville coach Lori Alexander. “I moved her up for the last game and got her a few innings in. She was the only pitcher that (Marcus) hadn’t seen. So, we started with her and she did a great job. Unfortunately they got a couple of hits on her late but she did an outstanding job and we’ll probably keep her up here at this level now.”

Lewisville (8-17, 1-5) got out to a fast start after Haley Howerton and Cynthia Barrera gave the Farmers runners on first and second with one out, following a pair of bunt-singles.

Cleanup hitter Amanda Scott drove in Howerton for the game’s first run, with an RBI-single to left field, but Foust would retire the next two batters to end the rally.

“We were a lot more selective today than we normally are,” Alexander said. “We have been preaching that at practice. Tonight, we were able to take it into the game. Especially against (Foust). If we can hit her and put the ball in play, then we can be successful against others too.”

Neither team would score again until Marcus (20-5, 6-0) got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third.

With two outs, Marcus’ KelVon Greer reached on an infield single. Wallace followed with a base hit to right field putting runners at the corners and setting the stage for a little trickery.

With Foust at the plate, Wallace intentionally got caught in a rundown between first and second, drawing the attention of the Farmer defense for enough time to allow Greer to head home for Marcus’ first run. Foust then followed with a single off the glove of Lewisville third-baseman Barrera to give Marcus the lead.

“We had a good opportunity with KelVon being at third,” Tumilty said. “She has a lot of speed and we tried to work that situation. They reacted the way we wanted them to and it worked in our favor. It was key to getting the ball rolling.”

Trailing, 3-1, in the top of the fifth, Lewisville had a chance for a possible big inning.

With one out, Howerton drew a walk and Reyes followed with an infield single. Barrera followed with a single to left, but Marcus leftfielder Danielle Blocker threw a perfect strike to catcher Sarah Draheim to throw out Howerton at the plate for the second out.

“When the ball went out there, I had held her up,” Alexander said. “But, when (Blocker) bobbled the ball, I sent her. I probably wouldn’t have done it with anyone else other than Howerton, and if she hadn’t made a perfect throw we would have been safe. She made a great throw though and found the ball quicker than I thought she would.”

Marcus then extended its lead in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by Courtney Flanary off the base of the left field wall before tacking on two more runs in the sixth, including an RBI-single by Foust.

The Farmers scored their second run in the top of the seventh on an RBI-double by Barrera that put runners on second and third, but Foust struck out Scott to end the game.

Marcus looks to remain unbeaten at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Southlake Carroll, while Lewisville plays at Flower Mound.

“We just have to stay consistent,” Tumilty said. “The kids can’t get complacent with where we are at. You can always find things to improve on.”
