Softball: Marcus’ Foust chews up Southlake Carroll

Published: Thursday, April 16, 2009 3:12 PM CDT
SOUTHLAKE — When Marcus junior pitcher Heather Foust wasn’t mowing down Southlake Carroll hitters, she was in the dugout chowing down on hot dogs.

Foust’s eating habits didn’t seem to affect her pitching as she limited the Lady Dragons to two hits and a unearned run in a 7-1 District 6-5A softball victory at Bob Jones Park.

By an unscientific count, Foust ate at least two hot dogs. She also struck out 12 and walked none.

“Whatever she needs,” said Marcus coach Christy Tumilty, regarding Foust’s eating habits.

The win clinched a playoff berth for Marcus (21-5, 7-0). Friday, Marcus hosts Coppell.

While, Foust was feasting on hot dogs, the Lady Marauders were making a meal of Carroll pitcher Kelsey Mann’s offerings.

Marcus collected 11 hits off Mann, including driving in all seven runs with two-out hits. The Lady Marauders were 6-for-10 Tuesday night with runners in scoring position and two out.

“I thought we hit the ball really well,” Tumilty said. “I was really proud of the scoring in the first inning with two out. We were able to put hits together offensively.”

With two out and runners at second and third in the first inning, Danielle Blocker’s two-run single gave Marcus a 2-0 lead. In the third, two-out consecutive run-scoring triples by Courtney Flanary and Hailey Winter pushed Marcus’ lead to 4-0.

The Lady Marauders’ final three runs came in the fifth inning on a two-out, run-scoring single by Foust and a two-run triple by Sarah Draheim.

Carroll’s lone score came in the sixth when Caroline Harroun reached on an error to open the inning. Harroun would eventually score on a ground out by Megan Yglesias.

“The only inning they scored was when we allowed their leadoff hitter on base,” Tumilty said. “What we want to do is carry that into Friday’s game with Coppell and make sure we keep their leadoff hitter off and get ours on base.”

The Lady Dragons leadoff batters in each inning went a combined 1-for-7 with four strike outs.
