East baseball teams with WBO

The Plano East baseball team and World Baseball Outreach, a faith-based, non-profit organization, have teamed up to collect new and used sports equipment at upcoming home games.

“Plano East head coach Travis Collins has given us the opportunity to collect equipment and in turn redistribute to children in need,” said Shelly Douglas, vice president of national and international business development for WBO. “Our ultimate goal is to mentor these kids and hopefully make a difference in their lives. Encouragement and building self-esteem is the mission, baseball and softball is just the catalyst.”

Sports equipment can be brought to Panthers home games against Flower Mound (Saturday at 11 a.m.) or Plano West (Tuesday, Apr. 21 at 7 p.m.).

According to Douglas, an East alumnus, baseball gloves are currently the item most in need.

“I grew up in Plano and played softball,” she said. “I always had the best equipment. I am thankful for that and now it’s time to play it forward and give kids that don’t have the resources a chance to play too.”

Proceeds from the golf tournament will support at-risk programs for youth in the Plano area. The foundation’s vision is to help provide and develop opportunities to encourage young men to do well in school and motivate them to become successful in life.

“Since starting the Foundation, we've teamed up with the Man Up project of the City of Plano recreation centers and the Plano ISD,” Blalock said. “We've also held an SAT workshop and look forward to putting on a football camp for kids.”
