Softball: Lady M’s top Coppell, wrap up playoff berth

Published: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 11:53 PM CDT
A pair of first inning runs was all that Marcus junior pitcher Heather Foust would need Monday as the Lady Marauders wrapped up a playoff berth with a 2-0 District 6-5A win over Coppell at Marcus.

Foust limited Coppell to four hits while striking out 13 as Marcus improved to 22-5 overall and 7-0 in district play. Tonight, the Lady Marauders face Flower Mound at home in a matchup that could decide the 6-5A title.

Staked to an early lead, Foust pitched with confidence.

“It felt really good to get an early lead,” Foust said. “I felt like I had a good defense behind me and could make those two runs stick. I was using mostly curveballs to keep them off balance.”

The Marauders opened the scoring in the first inning. KelVon Greer reached on an error, then Devon Wallace’s attempted sacrifice bunt found open ground between first and the pitching rubber.

Greer reached third on the bunt single and Wallace made it to second on the throw to third. Foust brought home Greer with a sacrifice fly to center field and Wallace scored on Sarah Draheim’s single.

“We made things happen in the first,” said Marcus coach Christy Tumilty. “I think we just couldn’t get it clicking again offensively.”

Marcus would collect one more hit off Coppell starter Laura Ramos.

Coppell tallied four hits off Foust but could not string together two in an inning. Foust kept the Cowboys leadoff hitter off base in each inning, including five strikeouts.

In the fourth, Coppell’s Madison Buckley singled and stole second, but Foust struck out No. 3 hitter Shelby Van Maanen and cleanup hitter Rachel Forstow.

“We just didn’t hit the ball,” said Coppell coach Katie Krug. “Their pitcher did a great job of moving the ball around and kept us on our toes. I have to give it to them, they are a good little team and play hard.”

Tumilty had nothing but praise for Foust’s effort against Coppell’s potent lineup.

“There are a lot of good hitters on that team and she kept them off balance,” she said. “We also made some pretty good plays behind her defensively.”
