Flame and bang safe

Published: Wednesday, April 22, 2009 9:30 AM CDT
A gas flare and loud noise may startle residents Thursday morning, but the 50-foot high flame is only part of regular utility work along south Custer Road between Eldorado Parkway and State Highway 121.

On Thursday morning, Atmos utility crews will be clearing (or flaring) a 16-inch natural gas pipeline. The flaring is necessary to relocate the pipeline on south Custer Road, between Eldorado Parkway and State Highway 121.

As a result, residents and passersby may see a large flame (or ‘flaring’) approximately 50 feet high n and hear a loud noise.

Atmos reports this action is routine and necessary before work can be performed on the line. Atmos also adds “flaring” is safer than releasing gas into the air and limits the smell of natural gas.
