Softball: Lady Marauders wallop Lubbock Coronado, 11-0

Published: Friday, May 22, 2009 11:21 PM CDT
Playing on the road in the playoffs is always a difficult proposition.

Friday night, Marcus’ softball team faced Lubbock Coronado at Eastland High School in Game 1 of the team’s best-of-three Class 5A Region I semifinal playoff series.

The Lady Marauders left little doubt in the opener, thrashing the Lady Mustangs, 11-0, for a five-inning run-rule win.

Marcus (27-6) and Coronado (33-4) change venues for the second-game of the series as the teams square off at noon today at Abilene Christian University. A third-and-deciding game, if needed, will follow 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.

The winner of the series will take on Plano East (22-14) next weekend in the regional finals.

Marcus coach Christy Tumilty hopes to keep her team oriented to their goal, winning the series, despite the distractions of travel and spending Friday night in Abilene.

“We just have to stay focused,” Tumility said. “We have to remember why we are here. We won an important game tonight and have to come back and do it again.”

Junior pitcher Heather Foust blanked the Lady Mustangs for five innings Friday. Foust allowed one hit, struck out 10 and walked none.

Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Coronado attempted to rally against the Lady Marauders. Leadoff hitter Megan Grando opened the inning with a single and Lauren Barker followed by reaching on an error.

With runners at first and second and none out, Foust got Kelsea Blackstock to pop up to shortstop Courtney Flanary, who doubled off Grando at second. Then, Foust struck out Meagan Naverrette to end the threat.

“I thought we played really well,” Tumilty said. “Their leadoff hitter was very good and we were able to keep her off base most of the game. The key for us is coming back tomorrow and making adjustments and finding a way to win the game.”

Marcus was able to collect 13 hits Friday as each starter had at least one hit. Most of those came off Lady Mustangs’ starter and loser Naverrette. Coronado also helped the Lady Marauders by committing six errors.

“It took our kids a while to get used to her pitching,” Tumilty said. “She had a different style where she hid the ball a bit. Our lefties had a little bit of trouble seeing the ball.”

Left-handed hitters Devon Wallace and Danielle Blocker were able to solve the Naverrette pitching conundrum. Wallace finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Blocker added a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Sarah Draheim scored two runs and also drove in two. Leadoff hitters KelVon Greer, another lefty, scored a pair of runs in the win.

Marcus scored three runs in the second and added four runs each in the fourth and fifth to win. The victory moved the Lady Marauders within a win of reaching the regional finals for the second-time in three years.

In 2007, Marcus defeated Midland, 2-0, in the regional semifinals in Abilene, then beat Justin Northwest, 1-0, in the regional finals. That game started in Saginaw and because of torrential rains was completed in Abilene. Drahiem hit a walk-off home run off Brittany Barnhill to win the game. Marcus lost to Katy, 4-1, in the state semifinals.
