Presby educates parents

The Collin County chapter of the Safe Kids organization is reaching out to parents in an effort to educate them on a new state law requiring stricter child safety seat requirements.

The former laws required children under the age of 5 and shorter than 36 inches to sit in a child safety seat. The new legislation, already passed by the House and Senate and waiting for Gov. Rick Perry’s signature, requires all children under 8 to sit in a booster seat unless they are 4 feet 9 inches tall.

The chapter’s lead agency, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, traveled to Weldon F. Corbell Elementary School Wednesday to conduct a presentation to the students about car seat safety, and how it saves lives.

Danelle Parker, Safe Kids coordinator, said the coalition’s goal was to get kids excited about getting back into a booster seat.

“The goal was for them to go home and tell their parents about it,” Parker said. “This helps start the education process for parents.”

On Thursday the coalition delivered about 100 booster seats bought through grant money and gave them to parents in need as well as made sure existing booster seats were secured properly.

Lindsay Debergh, mother of kindergartener Brendan, said he came home from school Wednesday raving about getting a new booster seat. He told her over and over how excited he was about getting a new booster seat.

“He wanted to make sure we were doing everything right,” Debergh said. “He was also concerned about his two younger brothers.”

Debergh said an important aspect about the new state law is it focuses on height and not weight.

“A seatbelt will only fit a child properly when they can sit with their back to the seat and feet on the floor,” Parker said. “We want people to understand it’s about height, not weight.”

" Why not require all kids under 21 to wear booster seats. Honestly, this is crazy. At some point, people need to wake up and realize this is nothing more than effort to sell more booster seats.

Why not require adult diapers be worn for all drivers. It would make them safer, not rushing to local McDonalds.

This is the land of the free! Parents already protect their kids. We dont need to dictate how and when 24 hours a DAY. "

" Everyone that doesn't like this law, like me, write to Gov. Perry and tell him Kay Bailey Hutchison will get elected if he passes this rediculous law.

We are no longer the land of the free but instead the land of the controlled. "

" Kay Bailey Hutchinson is for this law retard. This law is about protecting those with the common sense to buckle up thier kiddo's. The idiots you and I see driving everyday with multiple kids unbuckled in a car with no car seat in sight - Well this law will furthur help to filter the gene pool. "

" i seriously can not believe you guys are bitching about child safety. if research proves the seatbelt doesnt protect children under a certain height than why in this world wouldnt you want to do everything you could to help protect your child. its no more effort for your lazy behind when snapping them in and i doubt it cost more than you spend on fast food a month. either you all are chronic complainers or you do not value life. "

" Hey Murphy! I want you to call me a name to my face, see what happens.
The whole point is, that 'we the people' do not get to vote or decide on these laws. This law is one more that we are forced to obey and I'm sure it is the insurance companies behind it. Car manufactures could make seat belts for kids that would protect them just as good as a booster seat. They could also do more to cars to make them more safe. But with this law they just find another way to milk people out of their money. "
