Fire marshal finds suspicious package next to vehicle
By Stephanie Flemmons, Staff Writer
A Plano fire marshal representative discovered a briefcase he didn’t recognize within inches of his vehicle after leaving lunch Wednesday.
The car was a marked city vehicle with the Plano Fire Department logo written on the side. The representative immediately notified police and the bomb squad responded to the call about 1:30 p.m. at Scotty P’s burgers located at 2900 Parker Road. The burger restaurant, along with about six surrounding businesses, was immediately evacuated when police arrived.
“When you don’t know the contents of the package and it was left in a suspicious nature like this, you have to take all precautions,” said Rick McDonald, Plano Police spokesman. “At this time there were a lot of people eating lunch including high school students eating off campus.”
The bomb squad deployed their bomb robot to retrieve the brown briefcase that was about two feet by eight inches in size.”
The robot transported the briefcase to the department’s total containment vessel, which is designed to hold explosive devices.
A bomb squad officer fully dressed in his bomb suit secured the vessel and walked to the fire marshal’s vehicle to search for anymore suspicious devices. The bomb officer, who was equipped with a mirror, checked underneath and inside the car. The vehicle was rendered safe and the bomb unit transported the suspicious package inside the vessel to a remote location to determine its contents. The department is waiting on the results of the bomb squad’s investigation of the package.
McDonald said no one has come forward with any information about the briefcase. He said there were sightings of an individual on top of the restaurant’s roof, but officers could not confirm that was true.
“This incident was very suspicious in its nature,” McDonald said. “It was a package placed against a city vehicle and left unattended.”
