Baseball: Marcus bound for regional final
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
ABILENE--Just as they did in Game 1, Marcus’ baseball team used a combination of dominant pitching and the big inning to complete a sweep of Odessa in the regional semifinals with a 10-0 win at Hunter Field on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
Marcus advances to the Class 5A Region I finals, where they will face El Paso Socorro, who advanced after sweeping Marcus’ city counterpart and District 6-5A member Flower Mound Saturday. The winner will punch their ticket to the state tournament.
“Today, we had a total team effort,” said Marcus coach Art Senato. “We performed well in all phases of the game. We had great pitching from Michael Gill, we had big two-out rallies and we made all the plays in the field. We played perfect defense and ran the bases well. We played like a team that is playing its’ best baseball, and we are right now.”
“He’s an amazing kid and talent,” Senato said, of Gill. “Once again, he played big in a big game. That’s (Gill’s) second shutout of the playoffs and he’s given up two runs in 21 innings. Coming into this game (Gill and Carter’s) ERA were a combined 0.80. So, if you are going to give up less than one run per game, you’ve got a great chance to win.”
Gill also got Marcus in front with a solo homer in the bottom the third inning off Odessa starter A.D. Hinojosa, a ball that bounced off the top of the scoreboard behind left field.
“I just wanted to throw strikes and be aggressive,” Gill said. “Both at the plate and on the mound. The game plan was to throw strikes and let them put the ball in play and I just tried to stick to that. The offense was great and took some pressure off, and the defense was phenomenal behind me.”
Marcus added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before breaking the game open with a seven-run fifth inning.
Marcus leftfielder Layne Nelson, who made a pair of running catches in the outfield near the wall, opened the inning with a single to right field.
He moved into scoring position with a stolen base on a strikeout, and remained at second base following a fly-out.
But, with two outs, Marcus’ offense got going.
The Marauders had 10 consecutive batters reach base, including seven singles and three walks. The inning ended only when Odessa threw out a Marcus base runner at home plate for the third out.
Nelson also had an RBI-walk in the inning, and Marcus also received a two-RBI single from Jameson Holt, as well as RBI-singles by Cody Kuecker, Brode Boyd, Gill and Tate Baker.
The Marauders added a run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the game when Victor Guerra scored from second on an Odessa error.
