Dallas Cowboys tie on aprons to raise money for paralyzed coach
By Stephanie Flemmons, Staff writer
Players from the Dallas Cowboys tied on their aprons and welcomed tips as they served as waiters, bartenders and cooks to help raise money for the Rich Behm Family Trust Fund on Thursday night.
The event, hosted by the Dallas Cowboys Women’s Association, brought in more than $10,000 in a two-hour period.
Behm, Dallas Cowboy scouting assistant, was paralyzed when the team’s practice facility collapsed on him in early May.
“This is all part of being a Dallas Cowboy,” said Tony Romo. “We want to be a part of this cause and let them know that we care.”
Jason Witten, who broke a little sweat while preparing the sushi, running food and working the bar, said this is the type of event he would not pass up.
“It’s a tragedy what happened a few months back,” Witten said. “Rich is a big part of our football team and our family. I wanted to jump at the opportunity and help give his family money and help them out with the trust.”
Witten, along with the other players, made their rounds throughout the restaurant by posing for photos with individuals for $10 a pop, serving food, rolling up sushi, working the bar and selling raffle tickets from $10 to $20. The players also generously autographed shirts and the photos for the guests.
“I liked making sushi the best,” Witten said. “It’s absolutely a lot harder than I thought. I was a bus boy a little bit when I was real young, but I’ve never been a waiter so it’s a good experience and a good experience to be a part of this kind of event.”
Romo, Witten, DeMarcus Ware, Kyle Kosier, Nick Folk, Mat McBriar, DeAngelo Smith, Doug Fre, Pat McQuistan, Montrae Holland, Cory Procter and Bobby Carpenter, as well as former offensive lineman Marco Rivera, were among the players who worked the fundraising event.
“I’m here for the foundation to benefit the wives that go out and help this family out,” Ware said. “Everyone knows we are happy to help. We do whatever we can and plan on doing more.”
Behm, as well as his family and friends, attended the event and were presented with $5,200 from the accumulation of tips, raffle sales and photo booth sales. The restaurant donated another $5,000 from food and beverage sales.
Behm, a husband and father of three young children, sustained a fracture to his thoracic spine during the May 2 tragedy. The catastrophic injury caused a severing of the spinal cord and resulted in permanent paralysis from the waist down. Behm is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Baylor Medical Center.
The Rich Behm Family Trust was established in response to the overwhelming outpouring of generosity from Dallas Cowboys friends and fans wishing to assist Behm after the facility collapse. The funds donated to the trust fund are available to the family in order to meet their immediate and long-term needs. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the trust may enter any Bank of America location and specify their contribution be placed into the fund.
