The 366th District Court Judge said an offer for a "career change" with a private company prompted him to resign.

A Collin County District Court Judge who has overseen several high profile criminal and civil cases will resign from the bench.

366th District Court Judge Greg Brewer submitted his resignation on Tuesday to Texas Governor Rick Perry. The resignation will go into effect on Sept. 1 in the final year of his third consecutive term, according to Collin County records.

Brewer said he has accepted a position with a private company to offer general legal counsel.

"I've decided to change careers and I accepted a position with another company," Brewer said in a recent phone interview. "I don't want to say the company I'm going to, except that I'm just going to be offering them general counsel…The opportunity came along and my wife and I thought long and hard about it and we thought it would be the best thing for my career."

Brewer, a graduate of the Metropolitan State of College of Denver in Colorado, sat on the district court and county level for the last six years as a judge for the 366th District Court and County Court-at-Law No. 5. He also worked for the Dallas County District Attorney's Office after he earned his law degree from Oklahoma City University in 1995 and moved into a private law practice in 1998.

Brewer served as judge for several controversial and high profile Collin County cases that reached into the national spotlight. Most recently, Brewer issued a recommendation that convicted murderer Charles Dean Hood should have the right to file a claim of judicial bias because of a sexual relationship between Collin County District Attorney Tom O'Connell and District Judge Vera Sue Holland, both of whom proceeded over his 1990 capital murder trial that sentenced him to death by lethal injection.

Collin County Judge Keith Self, who also received Brewer's letter of resignation on Tuesday, called Brewer's decision a "surprise."

"I appreciated Judge Brewer sending me his correspondence to me and the Governor," Self said. "We just wish Judge Brewer well and look forward to his continued involvement in the community."

Self said the Governor's Office will appoint a replacement for the remainder of Brewer's term from a pool of applications compiled by the Governor's appointment office. His replacement will have to run for the seat in the March 2010 primary for a full term.

Brewer said even though he had to oversee some tough cases and make some even tougher decisions, he feels confident about the work he has done and the mark he left on the office and the community.

"I thought I've served the citizens of Collin County and the State of Texas well," he said.

He also said it is unlikely that he would run for a judge's seat after his return to the private sector.

"I don't think you'll ever see me come back as a judge," Brewer said. "Never say never, but I'll probably never come back as a judge."

" I wish Judge Brewer the best of luck. He has served our community well and with honesty and integrity. Whoever the company is that is hiring him should consider themselves very lucky. "

" An opportunity for Collin County to change for the better.

Please god, let's hope for a judge who actually knows the Constitution, Bill of Rights and pays attention to and protects our civil liberties.

The faster the long tired line of good old boys are gone the better for Collin County. "

" Door-Knob and Opportunity Knocks :

Are you those "crooks" who like to complain that "justice" only applies when it is in your favor ? If so perhaps if you followed the law you will not feel so bitter about a great judge who has served his community well . Are you a part of the "McKinney Community" or the "Community" located at the end of Community Boulevard ? "
